sowhat 1,572
was gonna put this in the working dog health section, but thought it might get more views etc on general..has any one on here had any of there dogs with this problem.. there running an advert on the radio at the moment[most proberly sponserd by the big drug companies]..about this,,bear with me,, well last may/june toured round france /spain/portugal. me, missus and dog. noticed after we got back to uk,the dog allus seemed to have a dry warm nose but was ok in herself..comes march time, dog just did,nt look right, seemed to go off the boil/depressed, slight cough/wretching.. any way took her to the vets for check over, they said she had bit of fluid on the lungs, told them she,d been abroad previous year etc, they wormed her and antbiotics etc..anyway she seemed to pick up,took her back week or so later, told me she was ok..anyway other day all the signs started again,so i started trawling the net on what could be wrong.so went back to the vets and told them i thought it was heart/lungworm. they did a blood test etc, gave me a months supply of milbemax [google it] rang next day and was told parisites in blood, had a wry laugh when the vet [spanish girl] said she thought we had got the diagnosis right.. trouble is,,we have got to this stage were the damage has allready been done.. so gotta live with it and see what the next few weeks bring , i would advise all of you to read up on this disease type thingy, because with this global warming thing we can expect all types of nasties turning up.. cheers byron.. Saw an advert on tv last night about this
Ratreeper 441
Personally I think the lungworm thing is just a scare to sell more drugs. I am very bitter about it though since my rottweiler had similar symptoms, he was fine in himself but had a cough that wouldn't go away. I was given loads of lungworm drugs and painkillers for weeks/months and I got the same disgnosis from several vets. Well eventually I had him xrayed and he had cancer, not lung worm. All the time spent pissing around selling the most expensive drugs ever did nothing to help him, just put me in debt and he had to be put down in the end. I was already pretty distrusting of vets, but now I am sure they care about only one thing and that is money.

claybusers al 9
i am near edinburgh, last time i had the dogs at the vets, i spoke to the vet about lungworm and he said that there where a few reported cases in southern england mainly dogs that travel, only 1 case in scotland in the last 10 years again a dog that had travelled, so google it if you are unsure. Tiercel 6,986
I lost a GWP to Lungworm /French heart worm about 4 years ago. The worm Angiostongulas Vasorum lives in the blood vessels from the lungs to the heart they grow big enough to block the vessels. Milbremax does kill them, (but there are issues with Milbremax and collie blooded dogs) but only the adults it does not kill the eggs. Panacur also kills the adult worms. I have now changed to using advocate spot on. It lasts for a month and kills the eggs as they hatch where as milbremax is only in the dogs system for 24 hours. The only problem with using advocate is that it does not kill round or hook worms so you have to use drontal as well. TC Edited April 20, 2012 by tiercel
neil cooney 10,416
Every one who keeps dogs should be aware of lungworm. It's not nice to see what it's capable of to a healthy pup . Edited April 20, 2012 by neil cooney
