boyo 1,398
the owner of said dog always has a very good dog or two around him, which again goes to prove if the dog has it in him and there is enough game to put in front of it reguarly the top men will always get it out of the dog or bitch. whereas otheres can have very good dogs but havnt got that extra something that these top men have .take the forley as an example ,the same people reguarly got through to the quarters and semis every year .. skycat 6,172
Good thread boyo. I've been fortunate enough to have one or two good dogs in my time, but I'm prepared to admit I've nothing special at the moment. Maybe one or two in the making, but with totally different jobs in mind. Because I've had decent animals in the past, I am so not kennel blind, in fact I'd say that I'm too critical of my dogs. Anything which seems special to me would have a hell of a lot to live up to, but that doesn't stop me enjoying being out mooching with the average dogs: they take a bit of game here and there, and there's always the added excitement of never quite knowing what your'e going to put up when mooching or bushing. As far as specialist dogs are concerned, well................. any time I want to go green at the gills and weak at the knees, I can go out with a good friend of mine whose dogs are pretty special. Then I'm torn between admiring the ease with which they do their job, and down right envy because I just don't have anything of that calibre at the moment. Hey ho, onwards and upwards as they say. 1 Quote Link to post

boyo 1,398
all good things come to them that wait and plan i always get more satisfaction out of a dog ive reared from a pup or better still bred as well, but very difficult to get a pup going living in s wales . ok if you want a lamper or a dog for mouching about ,but to run daytime on what i like its very difficult to put the game in front of them on a regular basis enough to make them top class . as even to run what we call local entails a 4 hour round trip and to run on the big land its 4 hours each way . not moaning at the distance because when we get there its all worth the distance somehow makes you appreciate it even more . but as a well known coursing mate said when he stayed with us a few years ago you lot must be mad to do all that driving to run puss easy for him to say that when he can go outside his back door and get a run straight away lol.. 1 Quote Link to post

Bosun11 537
Its the way of the world to want better BUT the trick is is not to let it consume you.............jealousy and greed can corrupt some people. We all should strive to better ourselves, dogs etc but not to become obsessed with it. Sensible post but some folk just have the type of mindset that when they have seen decent dogs run, they find it hard to accept anything less and imho, there is nothing wrong with that attitude.......I dont think jealousy or greed come into it, some people are just made that way. Same as there is nothing wrong with a bloke who is just happy with his dogs no matter what he keeps......... No one has to feed them except the owner, so its totally their call As you say, strive for better if your that type of person, its a good thing.......... the real trick is to know when to be happy imho Firstly, let me say that this is a cracking thred with some great replys and I couldn't better Wilf's wise words on the subject in both posts. For me, I wouldn't say i'm altogether happy with my lot at the min. Two years back I moved house and although I am now 'living the dream' as far as location, the dogs I have don't really suit the ground I can now walk out of my door and hunt. Don't get me wrong, there ain't nothing wrong with the dogs themselves, they are good enough... at what they do, but fall short of what now could be done. Because they ain't put a foot wrong they are here to stay and though i'm always tempted about getting another that would suit, I really could not justify, in terms of what I see as the right ammount of graft, keeping more than two lurchers. So i've simply got to let things be for a few years yet. Quote Link to post
