I can totally understand people not having sympathy for the lad....that was an incident here last year, 17 year old driving a mini cooper with three of her mates in the car. She came off the road doing 90mph on the crest of a small hill with a blind entrance to a park on it. If you drive over it at 60mph it feels like you're going too fast, 90mph is just unbelievably ridiculous. Guess what, girl in the passenger seat died and she just got minor injuries, typical! The case here happens to be driving but it could be anything........im sure the kid didnt set out to cause carnage but we dont all think clearly as teens................all the more reason teens shouldnt be driving in my opinion......theres 10 times more cars on the road to when we was young,cars are 10 times faster........but still the age for driving hasnt changed from 17......should be raised to 20 in my opinion. mangy1983 51 Posted November 19, 2011 Report Share Posted November 19, 2011 I was in a very serious RTC yesterday morning on my way to a Farmers Market in Winchester,my truck was in collision with a Citroen Saxo that came across the road at me.I am ok all but a few broken ribs and badly bruised with cuts and grazes,but,the other young lad was airlifted to Frenchay Hospital and the last I heard from the police was that he had already had 3-4 brain operations and he has broken almost every bone in his body.I was travelling at approximately 35-40mph,and he had to be doing 60-70mph which is an accumulative speed of over 100mph,and that is one scary thing to happen to you,but,I would like to take this opportunity to ask people to say a little prayer for him,even though he was daft and it was his own fault,I would feel a whole lot better if he pulls through,so,whoever you say your prayers to please spare one for this young lad. Everyone knows that bad accidents happen but you never think it's going to happen to you. Most people who were driving when they were 17/18 will have had some bloody lucky escapes, one's where after it you take a bloody deep breath and drive home 20mph slower....only to go out the next day and drive like a cock again. The ones that kill people/wipe out families etc. have the same incidents that we had, they just weren't fortunate enough to have that lucky escape that we had. I totally agree with gnasher on this one, there's not a chance a 17 year old should be allowed to get behind a wheel, absolutely nowhere near mature enough to have other peoples likes in their hands by having control of that steering wheel. IMO it should be 21 at the earliest, and then it should be a one strike rule until your 25....in that if you get caught for any motoring offence your licence has gone until you're 25. Sounds harsh but it would make them think twice about driving through a built up area at 50mph + like some of them did (my only three points were when I got clocked doing 52mph in a 30 when I was 18!). Luckily nobody on the bus was injured, neither was he, quietened him down for a while though. Another fool last year, teenager, came flying out of the college carpark straight into the front of the wife's car, drove off, luckily I got his registration number, got the insurance company from our insurance company, phoned them and said "Look if you don;t deal we got to the police!", they coughed up for the damage and injury! Young kid thinks he can drive going too fast causes mayhem and nearly kills himself and others....happens every day. It's no different to the rep on the motorway on his phone and/or eating a sandwich, the hgv driver watching tv in his cab or on the internet? Driving involves risks. The main problem in the uk is that kids dont start off on scooters at 14 like on the continent. Riding a scooter or motorbike hightens your awareness of your own mortality....then at 17 they should only be allowed to drive a non pas series 3 land rover so they learn how cars work, planning your manouvers/braking and they wont get distracted by a stereo.... No modifications or tweaking allowed! Then after 3 years and the driver being over 21 be able to move up to unlimited bhp, as in bikes. Might make the roads safer, how many of the plastic muppet car owners have notified the insurance companies that they have dropped the suspension, but a batmobile plastic body kit on and have a stereo used for torturing people by the American security forces?
