Solo Trip with Willow and Tiny

Willow has been very unlucky on our last few nights lamping so i thought i'd take her out and see if i could get some fur in her mouth this morning. Shes done really well at everything shes tried so far and i dont want her confindence knocked.

I fancied a low effort outing so took the new "stealth" box with Tiny, my smallest jill, a handful of nets and the micro shovel. I was having a mooch round some new ground on the way to an old bit so ideally wanted a reccy and a few easy bolts. I made the usual school boy error of trying all the easy buries first and avoiding the hard work ones. This resulted in a couple of blanks sets and two missed bolters for Willow. The buries i was heading for turn out to have all been grubbed out along with the hedgerow to open up a drainage ditch. A pain in the arse today but will make life easier when lamping so there is a silver lining lol.

I was on the way back to the van when Willow pushed one to ground in a bury, small in size but lots of holes under a bramble bush, that i'd opted to avoid on the way out. I netted up with the nets i had leaving more than half the holes open. I knew there were rabbits in there as i could hear them bumping about as i netted up. I entered Tiny and had two instantaneous bolts both into nets! I dealt with one and Willow held the other for me. I boxed Tiny up while i sorted the rabbits and nets out, bare in mind im crawling about on my hands and knees under brambles. All sorted and entered her again, three more in the space of five minutes, again all in netted holes! As i killed the last one Tiny appeared so I grabbed her and boxed her up. There were still rabbits bumping below but i had what i wanted and Willow had "caught", in her mind at least.

She's colliegrayxlurcher, nearly 14 months. She's been coming on well but just had two nights on the lamp where she just couldnt connect. She's done a quite a bit of ferreting but always with one of the other dogs, this was her first trip out alone.

Nice write up Tyla, sounds like your dogs on its way to being a good alrounder

Thanks stealthy, its a bit too early to say, she has several creases that need ironing out, but fingers crossed thats what i'd like her to be!

I always take mine out Ferreting from about six months, but that's all, no lamp work till older, I find ferreting is good for them, brings them on, and they usually start using their nose,

anyway well done Tyla, looks like you and your Dug are enjoying yourself.

Cheers lads, she has been watching ferreting since about 5 months but literally only watching. She was allowed to carry the rabbits (dead) from the nets to the pile but that was it. She also did a fair bit of rifle shooting with me over the Summer and had a few rabbits independently on walks. I held off any real work til she was a year old but did alot of training. Shes come on quite well, caught the first rabbit she ran on the lamp and has caught several bolted ones, understands the nets well but needs work on her retrieve. She does it but faffs about on the way back, im hoping she'll just grow out of that. Her concerntration needs a bit more focus but that too should get better with age and experience. Fingers crossed lol.

Hows your doing Yeeharr?

He's good, he's 7 months. He's seen a couple of bunnies that I've shot with the rifle and retrieved them, albeit in a puppy way. He retrieved a bunny on Saturday night that we shot on the golf course and I let him follow the beam to grab it. He's picked up a flapping woodie that I catapulted out of the tree and not much more. I've had him around the geese, ducks and chickens and he's left them alone. He takes no notice of the donkeys, horse or goats so that's handy! I've had him out with the shotgun and it doesn't bother him. He's laid back about everything. I have noticed over the last week that his response has slowed and he has tried to ignore me on a couple of occassions, I put this down to his rebelious stage starting and I'll just have to ride it out. In fairness, he's a good dog, still very dependant but slowly finding his way. I shan't do anything with him until after Christmas other than retrieving for my gun and ferreting. He has made attempts to drive. A few times on Saturday night he sat or stood on the accelarator pedal in the golf buggy and sent us shooting forward! He did do a better job at driving than Rascal, though!!!

We'll have to meet up soon and you can have a look at Paddy.
