lurcher330 2,301
i was out today in the lashing of rain doing a bit of bushing with my 3 lurchers and 2 of my terriers in a couple of fields at the back of my house, there is a lot rabbits about but they are hard caught because i walk the dogs in this field every day to excercise, but i had caught 1 and i was on my second time around and 1 of my wheaten x bitchs hit the cover like a ton of bricks, all off a sudden and i heard that distinctive scream that a ferret makes, but she dropped it straight away and moved off it ,now this bitch has been out ferreting with me loads of times with no problems towards the ferrets and my ferrets are house'd in the same pen as the lurchers and she has never bothered with them even when a hutch has been left open (usually by 1 of the kids) and ferrets has got out she has never touched 1 ,she is usually the one to bark as if to let me know that that i have an escapie , but i think this 1 just caught her by surprize and it was the movement she went for not knowing it was a ferret but the poor little fcuker was still alive but i had to put it to sleep, but my 7 year old son was with me and he was devitsatted because he is very fond of the ferrets ,i rang a friend of mine to ask him was his little brother out ferreting in the fields and he said no but he had gave a cinnamone jill to a local lad early in the day so he must of brought it straight out without a locateor nets or anything,i have taken some amount of quarry during my time hunting and it never bothered me but that today wrecked me head, i just hope the bitch done it by mistake and she hasn't all of a sudden taken a dislike for ferrets, but i don't think so. chartpolski 28,408
Dyslexia has never precluded punctuation; but is often used as an excuse for bad grammar !!! LOL !! No problem mate, I'm just being facetious, (I think) ! Cheers. Quote Link to post

martync1967 64
if a dog is working cover and something flashed past it,it would be instinct for the dog to react,i may be wrong Quote Link to post
BULLDOUG 199
Sounds like the dog was in full prey drive and made an error for this reason alone. But you say its a hard feild for the dog which in my opinion would have added extra stress on the decisive reaction strike Hope it works out, be ashame if it its not the above. ftm 3,357
i reckon it was a genuine mistake mate ferret in the wrong place at the wrong time ,and it doesnt take much from a lurcher to knack one have a bit of faith in the dog it probably wont happen again in your whole life time Quote Link to post
mushroom 14,203
Sometimes it can happen mate heat of the moment and the movement especially if you weren't out ferreting so the dog probably wasn't expecting to come across one and soon as she realised her mistake she dropped it. How did she return to you after?? was she looking a bit sheepish etc? Quote Link to post

Ratreeper 441
I flew hawks and one day the same happened to me, the bunny bolted and went straight down a neighbouring hole. Then BANG the hawk dropped on the ferret that followed it out. She was 100% before and after with ferrets apart from that one time. I know it might not be a relevant example, but I think if you start worrying about it the dog will pick up on it and just make it worse. So just crack on like it never happened (the ferret miraculously survived and hunted again the same as normal, the talons had wrapped right round...lucky ferrets have flexible ribs because it got a good squeeze ) Quote Link to post
