Buzzing like a fridge!

Recommended Posts

As some of you probably know, johnnyboy and I took a young lad (14) under our wing, end of last season, by the name of Young Tom. He has been coming out with us regular since then, and has been a real pleasure to have around, always keen to learn and willing to get stuck in.

Well, this year johhnyboy and I bred a litter of kits each, and gave a jill each to Tom, a poley from johnny, out of his best jill 'Poley' which Tom called Meg and a sandy from me, from my best jill 'Ruby', which Tom called Roxy.

We took him out last Sunday and he tried them out for the first time, Meg is 6 month and Roxy about 4. Between them they bolted a couple of squeekers and he was made up.

Anyway, today he couldn't come with us (lucky for him as we didn't end up going through various bad luck), as he was staying at a mates. He took the ferret kits up to show his mate (as they had a hutch he could keep them in over night).

Well, to cut a long story short, he got up early this morn, dragged his mate out of bed and made off for the local woods, where after trying various sets to no avail, Meg bolted one that they missed and then Roxy bolted one which they caught.

So he has now caught his first solo rabbit! The lad just rang me to inform me of this and was buzzing like a fridge, so excited and told me every little detail.

He even gutted it in the field and took it home proud as punch!

And then spent the rest of the day off with his mate permission hunting!

Just thought some of you might be interested in the lads progress.

Atb Ideation.

Cheers guys, i will pass on your kind words to the wee man!

I was really made up when he called me. When he first came out with us, he had never done anything ferreting related, and now after the end of last season and the start of this one, he can handle dogs and ferrets, find warrens, clear holes, lay nets, collar up ferrets, enter them, jump on a rabbit, dispatch it, and gut it. Makes me incredibly proud!

It is also nice to see ferrets that you bred doing the job well. I have not bred a litter in years, and bred one this year just to give Tom a kit. There were only two jills in the litter and i let him pick which he wanted. It makes me really chuffed to know that the first rabbit he ever caught out on his own, was bolted with the kit i gave him. The kit from johnny is equaly as sharp. And to be fair to the lad they are very well handled and looked after, a real credit to any ferreter.

To be fair to johnny as well, the man has a heart of gold, the lad went down for a kit, and came away with food, hay, water bottle, nets, a hutch. . . . .

All in all if my kids turn out like him i will be a happy man.

Really Jai,, the amount of kit I`ve given away lately to lads,, all still at school,, just to get them on,, and interested in the game,, we all need to do it to keep the sport in good hands,, I even gave away some of my mates gear!! and when I told him it went to a youngster starting out,, he was well chuffed

Spot on mate! We would sort out more lads, but to be honest i just don't know any. I bred a litter of 5 this year and still have 4 of them. But most of the kids that i do meet are little shits, interested in x-box and footy. Tom is like a breath of fresh air mate! He id definatly going to be a credit to the sport in the years to come.

I`m lucky in that I`ve met a couple on here that are well into the game and live locally (take a bow, lampingkid, and KX100 (and his twin)) good lads who are well into it. Honestly,, I`d give away allsorts just to stop lads turning into little waster drones like most round here
