Not the working lines Raiye, may aswell be a seperate breed to the show/pet rubbish........ I haven't seen any police dogs looking much better. A lot of forces until fairly recently still used to go down the free ads route, many are now importing good dogs and thinking about there breeding program, West Midlands and the Met are two at the moment, forces like Notts and several others are following suit............The majority of these good dogs can be found in private hands with folk competing in schutzhund/working trials etc, one of mine sired a litter and two went to west mids, one to Thames Valley, one became a cattle herding dog in the north west, and the rest of the litter went on to become successfull sport dogs, i kept one back and hes now with my dad.....I was offered 4 grand for the sire aged 7/8 by a police force, they said they would licence him on the streets and put him through the books as a 4yr old and use him as a stud base for the dog section, so dodgy paperwork goes on everywhere As i said Raiye, working and the deformed show and pet rubbish are poles apart, and also not all that common..... Ideation 8,217
Here is one good reason why! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ktyq3JPQ-N8 Interesting that the one dog locks onto the handler and they seem to have real difficulties getting them all to let go when commanded. 6pack 60
I wouldn't hold much faith in their breeding program, and what of those that don't make the grade? I still think they need to do much more to get the breed back on it's feet as a whole. We have a local schutzhund club and it is amazing to watch. They take all breeds too which I liked. Rotties, American bulls, some staffies, but not a single Shepherd.
Simoman 110
Yep, sometimes to much drive, results in tunnel vision and a dog biting its own handler even in a high excitement situation is really bad, they are used in high excitement roles....Thats why i have always said they are for very experienced handlers only, worked very high drive shepherds numerous times with no problems, BUT i have seen a few malis display this behaviour, unacceptable imo................ That's what i was thinking mate, it seems IF you can handle and train them properly they are a very very good dog to have, but it's a big if.

Rotties, American bulls, some staffies, but not a single Shepherd. i dont know what happens to those that dont work out Raiye, as i said the working lines are a total distinct thing, no work is needed, just same with any other breed, use the best stock, ensure they are free and tested for heridatary defects and entered correctly, so the breed as a whole is f****d, just keep the working stuff just that....working.........And i know a few folk in schutzhund and the successfull dogs in the UK scene are and have been predominantly shepherds.......Trained all the above breeds, we trained a couple of staffies to run up the leg to get the sleeve A good rottie is rarer than a good shepherd but i like them, American bulldogs, wouldnt have one given tbh, although im sure there will be some good ones........ secretagentmole 1,701
A Malinois or Gronendahl is faster than a GSD, more agile and a damned site more inclined to grab anything that dangles, damned fine dogs, my mother had a Gronendahl (the black version). Lethal at night those Grons... Also they are not as in bred as GSD, they are not as popular, that will probably change though! No offence mate, but gronendahls are shite, the Gronendahl/Terveren/Laekenoisare the other breeds that come under the mantel Belgian shepherd dogs, and none of them are used with any regularity as manwork dogs, and there is a good reason for this. Two fellas i know bred them and tried them in working trials and schutzhund, they are weak nerved, snappy and hyoer sensative........There is a reason only the malinois has been imported and popular, they aren't useless
