patterdalejoel 669 Posted September 17, 2011 Report Share Posted September 17, 2011 i was feeding my wee jil last hight in the dark. the person i got her off apparently has 180 breeding ferrets, and the jill i have is extremely possesive of food, to the extent that if you wave meat in front of the cage and she cant get it, she will go mental, whining scratching and screaming. i believe this to be that she never had a lot of food when she was young. anyway, i have tried to train her about food, but to no avail. amyway, when i feed her, i chuck the food in and quickly close the hutch door as i have too many times had my finger latched onto in her frsntic search for the food in the dark. anyway, last hight i chucked the rabbit in and shut the hutch as usual, but when i came to look in at her in the morning, she was sat in frnt of the mesh, and i found her back foot trapped under the door. i dont think the leg or ankle is broken, and she doesnt seem to mind or be in pain when i touch the leg foot or ankle. but the foot is now very swollen, but i dont think it is broken.? will the foot be broken? will it heal? will it be ok? she seems perfectly the same, just less mobile, and im hoping and pretty sure it is just bruising. any advice? and before anyone has a go, i have already cursed myself of my mistake. cheers, joel. ferret100 47 Posted September 17, 2011 Report Share Posted September 17, 2011 If any toes are broken/dislocated the swelling might hide that. She must have struggled quite a bit to free herself, so damage elsewhere is also possible, she might be in a bit of shock as well. The fact that there is swelling shows there has been injury on some level and it's not great that she doesn't react to you touching it. Does the swelling make a noise like rustling tissue paper when you touch it or when she walks around? Defo worth getting checked out asap, even if she just gets some drugs for pain relief. patterdalejoel 669 Posted September 17, 2011 Author Report Share Posted September 17, 2011 the jill did not squeal, and the foot was only swelled up about an hour after i discovered her and released her foot.normally she runs straight to the sleeping box when she has the meat and is no where near the door. when i released her she was fine, i picked her up looked at the foot and she seemed fine, she seems to be getting more mobile every time i go to check on her. The foot became swollen after time, because the swelling didn't have the room to do it's job when the foot was trapped in the door, as in, the swelling hadn't the room to squeeze in! Swelling is a defensive reaction, it 'cushions' injury. If she is getting more mobile, and the swelling reduces more and more when she walks about, then that's a good thing. It might be much more swollen again after she sleeps, but if the swelling goes down after she's up and about, that's a good sign. If the swelling remains constantly, then defo an injury has happened which needs checked out. Good luck with it. Quote Link to post
