Guest Ditch_Shitter
Born thursday morning. I simply haven't had time to mention them yet! One of Each! ~ And a Proud Mum And that's pretty much the sight that greeted me when I looked into her stall, yesterday! Minutes old! I'd been expecting them any day now, for a few days. Was rather hoping for some colour - as my male's a coloured, 'Scruffy Goat' / Toggenburg type. She's more a Sanan type. Typical white Milker. Anyway, cute as f*ck little f*ckers, the pair of them. One wasn't even on its feet when I looked in. By tonight 'Small Dog' ("Hannah") , my JR bitch had managed to sneak in for a look. " Munch ", the mother, kept her at bay but wasn't overly bothered ~ Small Dog actually worships my 'stock and is subserviant to all of them. The kids themselves couldn't seem to give a damn either way. Certainly, for as long as either of them stay with me, they'll learn that Small Dog is no problem. What will I do with them? God knows! I've always intended to offer one to Pat, my neighbour. He's almost hysterical about the threat a goats appearance would cause to his cattle. (Cows, he tells me, are terrified of goats. They don't recognise them, thus fear them and the goats instinct to join their herd can lead to a stampeed into the next county ~ misunderstood goat in hot pursuit of terrified beef herd!) Seems, if cattle are raised around a goat, all is fine. Noel keeps a goat. So does Tom. So I'll offer Pat one of these. Up to Pat if he has the good sense to accept it, of course. If he does? Genderal choice is his. I have a male so can't keep another. But a male will reek for a few months of the year. If he wants the female? He's welcome. Only she'll need milking. Maybe he'll have a use for the milk enough to make it worth his while being tied to that responsibility? If he's just not interested? Fair enough. I can see them both ending up down the local 'stock sales! Life goes on and we'll see Hullo World; What's Life Hold For Me? Great though, aren't they ~ Kids?

Ossie 11
i'd almost forgotten how sweet goat kids are! haven't had any for years, not since the old saanen x keeled over. she always used to have 3 billy kids at a time, we crossed her with a big old shaggy brown billy goat, but she always had white kids. we used to put straw bales out on the meadow for them to jump around on, mad little things! if only they stayed little & cute forever... Guest Ditch_Shitter
Swamper; If ye can keep a Dog ye can near as damnit keep goats, mate. My first goats were kept in the back garden of a two up, two down town house. I bought them a standard, six be four shed to shelter in at night - far bigger than they ever needed, as it happens - and they thrived like weeds and never once gave me or anyone else either side of me a minutes trouble. Their droppings were just compost for the garden. Their stale bedding I put out in carrier bags, for the bin collection. There was so little of it generated even that never became an issue in my inner city home. I could even buy their odd sack of supplementary feed from the local pet shop. Over all? I'd say keeping those two, medium sized, female goats in my small back yard was probably less trouble than a great many single Dogs can produce. And their entire time with me was an extreme pleasure Why did I have to get rid of them is the obvious, unasked question. Simple: The Pit Bull pup I raised along side them was killed by a duff vaccination jab, administered by my vet of that time. The next Dog I brought in wanted to kill the goats - he being an adult. I filtered and by passed the legions of idiots who came after them and settled them with a private 'Goat Haven' where I'm delighted to think of them still being. Perfectly happy and part of a huge flock Funny thing is, having said all that; I now have two acres available to me and proper, purpose built 'stock sheds. And my two cause me more constant and cumulative stress, worry and grief than an untrained pack of wolverines could! B*stards! Maybe I should just build them a small, brick walled enclosure like that back garden? Thanks, everyone, for the comments. Todays lesson? Baby goats shit peanut butter! I'd wondered what that was!
