Tyla 3,179
I have been holding my pup back, waiting for her to turn a year, just doing a bit of ferreting but decided to try her on the lamp last night as the wind was too good to miss. I would have been out a week before now, as soon as she hit a year, but she came into season and I wanted to get that out the way first. Just went to a local place which i've left alone for a bit to give her a good chance. The moon was massive and the promised cloud cover was nowhere to be seen so we kept very tight to the hedgerows and in the shadows as much as possible. There were a few rabbits out but i was looking for the perfect first rabbit. Willow has done some training retrieving a dummy in the lamp but never seen a rabbit run as Im trying a some advice i was given to bring her on without another dog. She wasnt watching the beam as much as i'd hoped and was very keen to use her nose, hopefully that will pass once she realises there more fun in the light than out of it! I found the perfect rabbit nice and far out, walked her up to it but she didnt see it til it started running. Slipped her and she was on it, put three turns into it and caught it in the hedge! First ever rabbit run on the lamp and she caught it! Her retrieve left a bit to be desired but she did bring it back, dead on arrival though. I was made up!!! Carried on a bit then i screwed up. Flicked the lamp on and there was a rabbit about 15 yards away, i slipped instinctively as i would the other dogs but it was far too close to the hedge for a second ever run. I knew she wouldnt get it even as i slipped but was too late by then. She manged to turn it once but it got away, i could have kicked myself. Next field, crept up the hedge and found another good rabbit right out in the open. Walked up to about 30 yards and slipped her, she was straight on it and it never even got a turn in she just straightlined it and scooped it up. Again her retrieve took a while and was DOA but overall i was pleased. I called it a night after that, wanted to end on a good note and i was pleased as punch with her. Two out of three slips the first time shes even seen a rabbit in the lamp! And retrieved after a fashion! Still lots of work to do but a very good start i think! 1 Quote Link to post

Tyla 3,179
Thanks, Im glad i waited rather than starting earlier. Going to do the same over the next week, two or three runs every night just her and me til we iron out the retrieve and a few other bits and bobs. Then, fingers crossed, we'll be ready for a proper night out Quote Link to post

I think it was a cracking litter, P said the other pups were doing well. We visited them from 3 weeks and had a couple of good mooches with Taff and Jess. I'd be really interested to see any pics of your pup. Quote Link to post
