J Darcy 5,871
I believe snaring deer is illegal. It is also illegal to hunt and kill anything other than a rat or a rabbit with dogs. Squirrels included. However, it is legal to use up to two dogs to flush quarry that is either to be shot or flown at by birds of prey. For deer, they can only be taken in the hours of daylight. In all the scenarios you need permission off the land owner. Birds may not be taken with artificial light. There is no minimum power for people shooting hares.(ft/lb or calibre) The only way you can legally bring a deer to the table is with a firearm, However...accidents happen....All the Best....JD

One of the farms sold a few fields with a barn on it, the chap who's bought it ha dammed streams and made flight ponds for the ducks and geese which breed out on the moor, he's advertising the shooting to let to an internet syndicate and has been brought down through his deeds to the land only allowing 1 named person to control rabbits Y.I.S Leeview
.terrier man. 193
it becomes illegal when you get cought
rob190364 2,594
Everyone knows how stupid the ban is for various reasons.....but I can't get my head around why they didn't include grey squirrels with rabbits and rats as legal quarry. I can only assume it's because the people who make the rules don't actually realise what an invasive species it is? to protect something that isn't native, kills song birds and their young and is driving out our own red squirrel is just staggering to be honest! But I guess it fits in the with nonsense of it all! Edited September 12, 2011 by rob190364

Also, JD, I believe its legal to flush game with an unlimited number of dogs to a B.O.P but a maximum of two dogs to the gun?
matt_hooks 188
For deer in England and Wales. For Muntjac and Chinese Water deer only- a rifle with a minimum calibre of not less than .220 inches and muzzle energy of not less than 1000 foot pounds and a bullet weight of not less than 50 grains may be used. For all deer of any species - a minimum calibre of .240 and minimum muzzle energy of 1,700 foot pounds is the legal requirement. In Scotland.... For roe deer, the bullet must weigh at least 50 grains AND have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second AND a minimum muzzle energy of 1,000 foot pounds. For all deer of any species - the bullet must weigh at least 100 grains AND have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second AND a minimum muzzle energy of 1,750 foot pounds. It's also legal, under VERY limited circumstances, to take deer with a shotgun. This is only for crop protection(and hence is called the farmers defence) where deer of the same species can be proven to have caused damage to crops, and only on the ground where damage is occurring. This also allows the shooting of deer out of season. A shotgun shell with minimum 12 bore, and shot size of AAA or bigger or a rifled slug of 350 gr or more. This only applies to "Land owners and their appointed agent"
