1st proper day of the season!

Recommended Posts

So, today was the first proper day of my ferreting season, and it couldn't have come soon enough!

Got up about 6am, jumped in the car and went to get johnnyboy68, two jills sky and poley, and two dogs Gem and Luna. Got back to mine, had a chat, grabbed two of my jills, Boots and Tilly and Finn the whippet and set off to the first spot.

Decided to start at some horse paddocks that we had not done before, although i had a quick look end of last season and knew there would be a few about. Pulled the car up, and there were a few sat out and about on the verge, most of which bolted the wrong way across the road and into a stream bed / gully.

O yer, forgot to mention, FInn had realized Gem was having a fake heat and decided to spend alllllllllll f*****g day trying to shag her, much to her disgust.

Anyway, went up the one field, dogs having a good race about, jumped the fence and got a decent mark, put down a good few nets, and dropped sky and poley down, and got a rapid bolt straight away and ferrets out.

Moved on next to a long set strung a long the dividing hedge between two paddocks. Netted up as much as we could, probably about 40 nets? and in the process disturbed a wasps nest, the inhabitants of which got a wee bit angry and Luna ended up receiving half a dozen stings most to her displeasure.

Anyway, got netted up, just as young Tom put in an appearance. Entered Tilly and Poley, it went silent for a bit and then we got a decent bolt, ferrets were working a long so we moved the nets on a bit, got another bolt. Then it went quiet, the ferrets started showing at the top end of the set and Johnnyboy68 and Tom started pulling up nets, just as Tilly shot back down and bolted a 3rd rabbit, who pelted a long the hedge and dropped down a now unetted hole, chucked a couple more nets back on, stuck my feet in a couple of holes and let Tilly back down on the tail of the bunny, who obliged by hitting one of the reset nets, set by a very pleased Young Tom.

Pulled all the nets up and moved down to a little fenced in spinny, where we got some good marks by all three dogs, netted up, put down my two jills, and got 4 decent bolts, three of which we may have missed, but Gem (the crocodile) snapped up two, and Finn and Luna took the other between them.

So, 8 bunnys in the bag!

Decided to drive on a bit onto the estate, and after a natter with the keeper and his missus, had a walk a long some areas we usually do, didn't get much in the way of marks, managed to get one in a gully under a holly tree, stuck down the young jill sky and got an instant bolt.

Fecked off back to the car, moved to some different horse paddocks, had a nice mark on a set under some horrible dead holly, netted up and again got an instant bolt.

Next stop was a set under a huge old dead tree trunk, netted up, stuck down my young jill socks, lots of banging, then quiet, stuck down poley to give her a hand, then socks showed covered in blood with Poley nearby, and the only mark we could get was 12 ft down under the tree trunk, so no chance of a dig. Grabbed and boxed both ferrets.

Dropped Tilly down to see what was going on (she will show no interest if all occupants are dead), and she shot down, so obviously something alive down there, what ensued then was a battle royale, for about 45 mins or so, there was a lot of thumping, banging, a bit if squealing and general mayhem, but no bolt, this went on for ages, with Tilly briefly showing covered in a fair amount of blood, before diving back down and evicting the psycho bunny, who eventually emerged with bite marks on legs, face and back and a hole through the top of his skull.

Got a call from young toms dad, who was going to pick him up and so decided to call it a day, walked back to the car and got another mark in a small hedge set and quickly netted up and dropped Tilly in, out came rabbit number 12, straight through the fence, but well pursed and well dived on by me.

So all in all a cracking day of good banter, laughter, a dozen bunnies in the bag, none missed, the dogs and ferrets worked well, and the sun shone!

Went home, had a cuppa, took John home and the came back for a roast dinner!

Job done.
