In all honesty the first word out my mouth this morning was "bollocks" :laugh: Half past bloody three in the morning, an earful off the wife for waking her up and now this - a cold and blustery wind driving the sort of drizzle which gets you soaked and fogs your optics up. Perfect contitions for a cold, wet walk. Fortunatly my mood and the weather improved on the way to Foxdroppers in Wiltshire - the land of milk and honey :thumbs: I told him what the weather was like in Somerset 40 minutes @ 90 mph away and he said it'll be here in a hour so there was cut the foreplay and get on with it.

 

We made out way around a large area which is part of a livery complex and is currently laid down to hay. I've had the pleasure of taking a buck here on a perfect summers evening a couple of years back so new it was a good spot and we were likely to see deer. They obviously hadn't read the itineray and were not in the expected places and who could blame them.

 

We carried on and looked round some chicken sheds where FD has an ongoing fox control programme but this was quiet as well but we were kept entertained by the goings on of songbirds busily nesting in the hedgerows and hares lolloping in the fields. The weather was closing in as expected and the time to call it a day was on the cards as we were striding along a farm track where the bordering field was tall rape and seperated by a thick hedge. We slowed our pace as you do when approaching a gateway and both froze at the same time to see a bloody decent buck not 15 meters away nibbling the last remaining flowers on the crop. The rifle was already swinging off my shoulder as I glanced at FD to get the nod and soon as I saw the acknowledgement got a bead on the buck before FD changed his mind :laugh: The buck crossed the thin ride between the crop and the hedge and paused with his neck out ready to go through into the neighbouring field. There was a 5-BAR gate inbetween us so wanting to give plenty of room above the top rung I shot hi free-hand in the base of the neck.

 

He went straight down but i'm sorry to say the shot was a little high and whilst it put him down he was far from 'out' so I stuck him with the knife through the brisket and covered his eyes with my cap as he bled out and faded.

 

A chunky six pointer which was almost green where he had been thrashing the rape - he shouldn't have been there so it was certainly a case of being in the right place at the right time :thumbs: Pure blind luck :yes:

No probs mate .As said we were beginning to lose all hope as the weather was coming in a bit but the luck held again :whistling: Its a very good buck though,one that has held territory here for a couple of years i think .His replacement is in the wings though make no mistake :boogie:

Another medal for the Somerset trophy hunter ,lol.The cost is mountain up a bit now mate ,lol.

Cheers all - almost a shame there wasn't more of a tale skill, fieldcraft and of man versus beast as he is a nice buck who basically fell to a messer who was more suprised to see him than he was :yes::laugh: He's cleaned already and drying ready for the wall although I have to say FD it's really not fair as these deer of yours are costing me a fortune in CIC certificates and medals :toast:

Gav that is a nice head have you had it measured what dose it weigh

 

hi av not had it measured yet am hoping to soon it weighs 511g dry :thumbs:

do you think it will make a medal if so any idea what one

      Trip last Saturday to West Sussex in that evil storm,flooded roads,crazy winds .
      The usual warm welcome and off out to be dropped in a high seat.3o mins later saw a little white bum ,bins  up it's a  Roe buck Doe and fawn .
      Shot the fawn ,nice size Doe and waited but the other  Doe didn't return to her fawn .Green out ,healthy gralloch .
      Back to the Bothy, fawn in the chilled and bald bloke to local for a nice nosh.
      5am already up ,tea and biscuits meet the other guests and out .Unsuccessful hour in a different seat and off on foot to see a massive buck 10m away. Took the heart shot ,he ran and dropped. This can't be right he was massive, this is a spiker. 
      Me tit, scope on 9 not 0 so at 10m he looked huge .Nice clean gralloch, and luckily the guide was with me as he was a fat boy to carry.
      Great weekend, good craic,great friends
