rolysmate 49
I"m sure if you look you"ll find what you want without breeding from your bitch and as has been suggested why not go with a cocker Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Would a cocker match my JRT bitch for finding and flushing game? Will they get stuck into thick cover like a terrier will? Are there working cockers about that don't carry the stupid KC price tag? I hadn't really considered a pure spaniel due to having the above questions. Gaz Quote Link to post
rolysmate 49
Don"t know about the price tag BUT they will definitely do the business without worrying about going to ground, you may if you look come across a cocker cross from an accidental mating thats not at silly money Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Okay cheers. Sounds like its worth thinking about. Thanks Gaz Quote Link to post
baldockbanks courser 598
I know what your saying about the k.c price tag mate. If you buy a well breed k.c bitch look on it as an investment. you should get years of work from her and then what ever money you buy her for you can expect the same back x 10 if she has only 2 litters of 5 which is not unreasonable to expect from a cocker bitch. and cockers are popular little dogs so your less liklie to be stuck with any of her pups where as russel spaniels may be a diffrent mater. But at the end of the day do what suites you. 1 Quote Link to post
shepp 2,285
Cocker patts, they make a nice little cross. Think I would for one as my next bushing dog. Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Okay thanks for replys. I arent in a rush, for now she is deffinitely doing the business as a busher. Just a shame she disappears occasionally. But you cant have everything in life :-) I might go down the cocker spaniel route and I might look at putting a cocker over my bitch. Eiher way it won't be for a few years, so got time to decide and see some cockers work. Thanks Gaz Quote Link to post

Are there working cockers about that don't carry the stupid KC price tag? I hadn't really considered a pure spaniel due to having the above questions. Gaz The answer to your first two questions yes the third no but you might be lucky in finding a litter at a more reasonable price than wat a lot are asking.Springer russels make very good bushing dogs also theirs some small type springers about if its size you are concernd about to breed to a jack russel bitch. Gaz_1989 9,539
Would you go for springer or "sprocker" as opposed to a straight cocker then to put over a JRT bitch poacher? I was thinking a small cocker to match the size of my small bitch. Cheers Gaz Quote Link to post

I was thinking a small cocker to match the size of my small bitch. Cheers Gaz I can only go on wat i have seen and have never seen a cocker x russel working but the few springer russels i have seen a springer would be my choice. One i saw years ago that came off a well known coursing man [springer x russel] was a very good cover dog so much i heard he used to gamble on it catching rabbits in thick cover against other dogs though one day i was out with it it did dissapear in a burrow. ryno 11
Ive just measured her and she is band on 10" tts. Has anyone any experience with JRT x Cocker Spaniel? I've heard they make good bushers but might the tendency to go to ground still be there? Gaz i have a cocker x lakeland, she bushes for rabbits well, not the best ratter but does a decent enough job, works with ferrets ,and i have beat on shoots with her. her mother lakey bitch was a great dog but went to ground,my cocker dog got across her accident mating but now i'm glad it happened..i would recomend terrier spaniel cross all day long atb ryno Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Cheers Ryno. You said the lakey bitch went to ground. Does the cocker x lakey out of her go to ground or not bother? You any pics? Cheers Gaz Quote Link to post
rocky1 942
their was pat/cocker in the free section the other day only a young dog aswell Quote Link to post
tinytiger 867
when i was young a man nearby had an accidental litter of a 3/4 bred wheaten hound dog over a bitch very similar to your own-he gave them all swimming lessons bar one-turned out a cracking rabbit dog and caught a hare once (hunted up and given no law obviously).I dont think the dog went to ground although it was well small enough.(13-14 inches tts) Quote Link to post
