Hancock bashing

Recommended Posts

I prefer a dog to be nurvouse of strangers, stops them getting niked ;)

Only my personall opinion. :drink:

Got my whippet bitch pup at 12 weeks, she was shy and hid. I got to know her really well and now, is all over me, not leaving my side. She gets on fine with my son and wife, but when out in the feild for excersise ect, if i come across a stranger, she will have her hackels up and not go near them, avoding them like the plague.

All the litter were shy, the lad that brought them up, lived in the middle of nowhere, on a mountain and surrounded by bunnys. He had a nice set up and all dogs were in tip top condition, but seen no one, just him.

Frank.

Brookie you prove my case perfectly, bah bah now go back and join the flock. ,nice one ditch, glad to see that your on the ball. :clapper: , moorman 1 , please except my humble apologies for getting the wrong end of the stick. :icon_redface: . Think we can deduce from this so far that you are either open minded enough to realise its what you are capable of doing with the pup that counts OR your the tunnel visioned numb nut that has never tried one just spews out crap about them because you probably havent got a clue about dogs in general, There is nothing wrong with having an opinion just make it an informed one, not just rubbish something because thats what my mate says about them so it must be true.

The one thing we can all agree on though it seems is his place is a mess, and he has been very successfull at doing it for a long time, but surely even this latter point must go to show the dogs arent that bad, why else could he shift thirty or fourty litters a year.

Moletrapper if this is aimed at me then you haven't read my posts properly, because if you had you would have read that I do own one and have for the last ten years. So this is an informed opinion.

i have seen one or two work, and one of them is excellent,i would nt buy one from hancock because i find a dirty ,untidy place disrepectful to a potential customer,a sign of a crazy lazy old fool.a clean tidy place shows your comitment, professionalism, etc .if he cant be bothered to clean the place up ,i woulnt buy one if every dog was a cracker.

Very true.

I would bet my life that if Joe Nobody came on this site and advertised a litter of collie/greyhound pups at £170 (or whatever he charges for a pup these days) from a non working collie chained to a wooden kennel and a retired ex track greyhound, folk would be all over the thread like a swarm of flies round shite :clapper: then if someone from the site went to see the pups and they were in a dark pen in some old barn, on soggy straw, or sitting looking fearful in a corner, they would be on here quicker than you can say "puppy peddler" with a post to warn everyone not to waste their money, dont deal with this C*** etc etc :censored::censored:

But Hancock manages it. Fook knows why :icon_eek: Its always going to be one of lifes great mysteries, it may be boring old hat to some, but it will interest and educate others, these threads will always crop up from time to time, as long as the man continues to breed and sell puppies, and people continue to buy them it will always be a talking point, probably even long after hes dead and gone, as Plummer still gets the tongues wagging from beyond the grave

Tote, both mine were bought at eight weeks, very outgoing gregarious dogs, love to meet people and dogs alike. Think the old saying you can only take out what you put in is very valid with dogs.

JDF, fair comment, just a shame a messer had it first, not really a fair trial, but at least you have an open mind on the matter. :thumbs-up:

well mole trapper i try to keep an open mind about everything, just don't always manage it. :)

DS made apoint about the age of the pup and socialisation which remined me that the dog i got was sent here by air.if i remember correctly they have to be 14 wks to do that so that may have had something to do with why we never clicked.

Hancock may not work all his dogs but he gets plenty of feedback from the people that have bought pups from him.His Greyhounds are usually ex track dogs and his original collies have all been purchased from generations of proven workers.

To be honest if you mated anything to a sighthound it would work given the chance to do so.

it depends of what standards you have THERE ARE DOGS AND THERE ARE DOGS

who gives a shit if you train it right it will do all you want and more .... ;)

Both Plummer and Hancock made a livelihood from dog's for a very long time, and for every 1 person that despises the breeding or the person there must be 10 that regard them highly. David Hancock has an Ad; in "The Countrymans" everyweek somebody's buying them :hmm: Brian Plummer sold mostly word of mouth somebody's talking about them :hmm: Not getting into an arguement or anything, but of the Hancock or Plummer dog's i've seen working most were capable on all legal quarry, again it boil's down to that well used term "each to there own"

had first cross bitch of richard jones in 1990,bit nervous and scatty, eventualy turned out a good rabbit lamper 40-50 a night (up perthshire) bags of stamina but yes she was an idiot! got home bred 3/8 5/8 collie cross now 1/8 beardie also a bit of an idiot but great alrounder,if Icould, I would get a pup at 5-6 weeks to "click" with the dog,but this may also be because of the beardie blood, borders keener to please you, also beardie coat feet and height also an advantage over border cross especialy first cross litters.

Brookies ramblings, sound remarkebly like that of another self opinionated, self professed excpert who was on here spouting off the other week about his knowledge regarding all things running dogs, or could they be the same fountain of knowledge. :hmm: Eitherway same old thing no grounds to base his opinion on just drivvle, if it isnt factual it isnt worth listening to. :D

i have read this thread with interest to me people are entitled to their own opinions, but when hancock dogs are mentioned on these sites people ridicule the dogs and the owners, i don,t own or work hancock type dogs but i dont knock them or ridicule their owners, at the end of the day there is good average and bad dogs bred out of alot of litters of all types of breeds ,be it bullcrosses ,saluki crosses e.t.c. as long as the owners are happy with their dogs what does it matter.regards collie john.

my cousin has retired now and all his dogs have passed away, the last one was a beardie collie cross off hancock, this dog replaced a merle bitch that broke her foot very badly and he had her put down hancock replaced this dog for nothing he also had a greyhound collie bitch 22 and a half inches she was she was one of the best rabbitting dogs i have seen all that i will say is he put an unbelievable amount of time in with these dogs to get them to the standard that he wanted from his dogs i believe it comes down to the person who takes these pups off the peddler to go out and put as much time as they can with these dogs and with a bit of luck you wont be to far away, however someone is always going to gripe about dog lines ie hancock, plummer, gould, minshaw., whatever the good points and bad i think its down to the people who own these pups to educate them properly.

my cousin taught me a hell of a lot i cant ever repay him for his time and knowledge a hell of a lot of people aint as lucky and are self taught just love your dogs for what they are and be happy with what youve got.

Exactly, Plummer's embellished fiction paved the way for Hancock to sell his legacy in collie/grey lurchers for ever more. If Brian Plummer's dogs were as good as he made them out to be then we'd all have sat back in awe in the 80's when the man was still alive. I had the dubious pleasure of a night out with the 'legendary' Merle with Plummer, Hancock and two other chaps back in the day and it was left standing by a 'lesser' dog time and time again. The photos in his book of the same name were, by Plummer's own admission, pics of stiff long dead foxes from out of the freezer. He was a school teacher, an educated and articulate man who could tell a good and believable story.

Hancock jumped on the '3/3 daytime hares' bandwagon and the rest is history. The fact is that a half or close to half breed collie/grey will be sure to catch their fair share of game day or night, but that would stand for nondescript dogs from a dog's home for which you had no idea of their breeding, temperament or ability.

His name sells the dogs not the reputation of the lurchers he produces.

Ask yourself a question - If the man sold second hand cars, would you buy one?
