it seems to be these days that alot of terriers are being bred for thare looks not for thare working abilty and some of the terriers are far to big even to get to ground olot of the young lads see a huge terrier that looks the part but never saw a days graft in its life and thare breeding off them its a bad way forward this thats just my oppinion

a working terrier that fights is nothing but a liability so when your out digging and your terriers at its fox you dont want to be seperating the others on the couples every two minutes plus if a terrier is going to get knocked up it should be below ground not while its waiting its turn. fighting terriers are normaly the product of lack of socialising and discipline when young a good well mannererd terrier can do the job just as well and they are less likely to give you problems in your kennels .

what does everyone think of working terriers these days just i persenoly think they have calmed down over the past 10 years becouse back then we could hardly go out without the terriers wanting to scrap like no tomorow it was a pain in the arse just these days they all seem to hardly fallout well it might just be me am not saying they have all calmed down but whare i am they defonetly have

hard to say regarding terriers fighting. but natural born earth dogs are getting harder to find too much shit been bred for dollar breeding silly chocolates for top dollar regardless of weather its a good earth dog or not colour been more important than working ability to greedy money scamming dealers that would`nt know a true earth dog if it bit them on arse wankers :wankerzo4: my opinion

A terrier that is a fighter is a nuisance and 9 times out of 10 no gud.Had a gud dog killed by two young black dogs 2year ago,and when it came time for them to work they were shit,only time they went to ground was when they were buried.

Cost just the same to feed a gud one as a bad one,the dog they killed was a gud dog.I kept them till they were well over 2year old but enough was enough so pts.

It is well possible to have good working terriers which don't fight, are quiet outside the job, and behave well towards people.

I work my terriers in packs to the pigs. If one starts fighting I will try to break it of the habit with all means. If he still continues to fight, whether over food, a shot quarry, space, jealousy, or whatever, I can't tolerate it in my pack. It has to go.

And so, I end up with 9 terriers now which can usually live and work together without fighting.

There is the odd scrap for exemple when they come in heat, but I have my mthods and really, never, tolerate fighting.

That seems quite clear to them and they hardly ever try, not among each other and not to strange dogs.

It has to do with selection though. Never breed to a dog that you can't cure of that habit, no matter how good. If you continue that for a few years you can have good workers with a social character to dogs.

But if you don't mind them fighting and spilling their energy and teeth which they should have saved for the quarry, well leave them to it then. Hunting dogs are for hunting.

It can happen, like at the beginning of the season when they are all too eager, but then sort it out for them and don't let it happen again.

A few years ago one of mine started fighting in the pack. Taking each of the others at a time. One day during a pig hunt, it took on its favorite victim again, and all others grabbed it and they would have killed it (and I would have let them) if it had not surrendered, screaming. I took the whole bundle of fighting terriers to the car (I was alone) separated them when it was clear the culprit was very sorry, and since that day she learned her lesson and never was a nuisance again.

The pain in the arse (here with us, usually patterdales) which threaten, attack and kill other good working terriers at home or in the hunting field. Such a dog does not belong at hunts. It should not even live.

For a pitbull it's ok to fight with dogs. Not for a working terrier. Fighting with dogs has nothing to do with prey drive, courage on quarry, gameness, etc. It's only in the way, a bother, and takes out precious energy and leaves damage.

If terriers today are not so quarrelsome, people have probably selected for the better.

Could be a sign that terrier people of today are not the scum anymore they used to be, but on the right, serious track, just like years earlier before the scum period.

A true working terrier should not fight with the pack, it should be calm and relaxed only when it's working will it change. After all what use is a terrier that fights with the pack? It's going to cost to get your terrier repaired, when out working you would have to keep your eye on them all the time, like previously said a terrier that fights with the pack is a liability. maybe poor handling resulted in terriers fighting each other.

has anyone found that litter brothers or sisters are worse for fighting. i had 2 brothers out of the same litter that would fight at any oppertunity had to let one go, but both are sound with other dogs. atb minnie.

my 2 fells live together no problem, and are fine with other dogs when im around, wouldnt trust them if i wasnt. when i got my fell dog i was told he was a fighter, in truth there was a long running unresolved feud between him and his litter brother riddick the last fight they had nearly finished the other dog. my fell bitch has to be worked on her own, shes a real jeckel and hyde character when her bloods up, have to give her "alone time" after a dig as she'll start fights otherwise

i had 2 dogs from the same litter and they were going to kill each other so i would never make that mistake again

This is one problem with adding bull blood. You must select. Select out the fighters. No matter if they're from the same litter or not. A working terrier must not fight other dogs, just quarry.

It has something to do with being stupid, with no brains, another problem of the bull blood addition.

A pure terrier saves its energy for quarry. It is no more, no less.

What if you have a dog fight and the one takes out a fang of the other, would you be pleased afterwards, while the wounded dog is young and only starting a career to fox and needs its tools?
