I had a lurcher pup last year that died from Parvo , the guy i got him from had told me that he was a good pup and that he had he jabs . Few days later blood passing from her, vet bill cost me 550euros, poor thing died. This dog died in the vets, but was in my garden for three days, my new lurcher is fine and has all her jabs :thumbs-up: , but I was told that parvo lives for three years in the ground?? brock 11
yes it can lie dormant for a long time, you need to disinfect the whole area with something like parvo-viricide,even if your dog has been jabbed it can still get gastrorenteritus as this is a form of parvo Quote Link to post

jim06 0
We had an outbreak of Parvo lucky 4 pups had already gone to their new homes and are perfectly fine. 6 got it of which we saved two, one went off to a new home, they were aware of the complications a pup can have after Parvo, one stayed with us and she is doing great isn't showing any after affects at all at the moment. We lost 4 pups unfortunately. We were told by our vet to completely disinfect the whole house with thick bleach or domestos as that will kill it, burn all bedding and when we were giving fluids every hour we had to have a different set of clothes and shoes for the parvo pups, we have had no problems with any of our dogs since. It is a horrific disease and i wouldn't wish it on my worst enermy Quote Link to post
Irish Lurcher 1,013
I did use bleach on all areas that the dog has been. Parvo is a b*****d of a curse to have visit your yard, what I cant understand is the fact that I had no other dog in the yard before the pup arrived, I now know he came with parvo, just goes to prove you cant trust everyone. I was told that birds carry parvo and not to encourage then into your yard???? One other thing, can you claim your money back if you get a pup that has died from parvo?? Thank god my new pup is really strong and she is due her booster jab next week. Quote Link to post
countrylass 0
Parvo can be carried on Shoes, Clothes, Car tyres, By flies etc, unfortunately my vet said there is nothing you can do to stop it if your dogs are going to get it they will. heart of wales 19
how soon can you jab pups for it Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
You can get a Parvo jab for pups of 6 weeks old, though Procyon (the make of jab) now do a 1st puppy vaccination that you can give at 6, or is it 5 weeks old. The thing to remember is that until 8 weeks old a puppy should have maternal immunity, but if the dam has never been jabbed then she won't have any immunity to pass on to the pups, unless she has had Parvo and survived, thugh I'm not 100% sure if this gives a lifetime immunity to the bitch. If you buy in a pup get it as young as possible and get it jabbed with either a straight Parvo jab or the first Procyon jab at 6 weeks, then follow up as normal with the rest of the puppy jabs. My own vet says there is no need to do yearly boosters, except for Leptospirosis (Weils Disease), as the immunity conferred by vaccination isn't long lasting. Quote Link to post
Irish Lurcher 1,013
My vet tells me that booster jabs are a must, I feel myself that its better safe then sorry, mine is just her booster jab next month. After my lurche rpup died from parvo, my terrier took sick, spent three weeks in vets on drip, would like to see an end to parvo. Quote Link to post
