rossy08 33
Now some of you may think iv lost the plot a little, but others will understand. i'm at this minuet in time quite exsited about the weekend. Why cus im going camping and hunting saterday night in good old derbyshire, (if i can get there) they already have a foot of snow and hopefully it will still be there, got to top last years trip out in 4inch of the stuff. am i mental???? maybe, but theres something to be said for stalking around in the snow with no one elce around, everything all crisp clear and clean. i dont even care if i shoot nothing its all about being out, call it a test of charecter, if i can manage the night in this weather then i can camp anywhere/time. getting a fire going will be a nice little challange to. Am i off me tree you decide.!!! Andy Quote Link to post
Phantom 631
Andy, I once ascended Mt Glaramara in the lakes in January. We began the hike and clime at just after midnight after spending much of the evening getting warm around the fire in a hotel that was closed for the season. Luckily there was a care taker and his rather tasty girlfriend. He couldn't pull a pint to save his life, but we didn't care the beer was free It wasn't too bad to start with but it wasn't long until we were waist deep in the fluffy white stuff and it became very hard going. Added to that, the winds got up and trying to pitch a Vango Force 10 was a nightmare at 03:00. The worst part though was comming down on the Sunday. We were walking single file and I was second after point. To make things easier for me, I was steping in Steve's foot prints (he was point at that time) and I had two guy's trailing. All of a sudden, I heard a loud crack followed by a splash, instantly my breath left my lungs and I was all of a sudden fighting for my life. If I had pulled my arms in to release the pack, I'd have been pulled under completely by the rushing torrent and the outcome would have been very different Luckily Cookie (behind me and Steve dashed as fast as they could and pulled me and my pack out of the raging water. The real bitch of it though was that my pack had taken on water and all my dry clothes were now waterlogged! I walked the rest of the way down in nothing but my nylon rain gear. So as long as you are aware of any dangers hidden under the snow and you keep safe, no your not off your tree. Just be safe in your enjoyment of the great outdoors Phantom Quote Link to post

Phantom 631
Hey guy's, Speaking of combustables, I have a Swiss army Trangia stove that I used at the meet back in July. However I also got a little tin with a Gel fuel in it dirt cheap on ebay. Complete with little stand for a pan or metal cup to hea.t. It was ex Swiss forces stuff and its expirey date was 1972 this is the one http://cgi.ebay.co.u...=item35ac6d6942 Comes with wooden matches, as soon as the foil was opened and the match struck it was burning, no waiting for the thing to warm the fuel before it got to optimum temp like some. Not only did it boil water faster than the trangia meth burner, once it cooled I put the lid on it and the next time I used it was the night/morning of my little camping bunny bashing trip at Gillians place, a few months later again as soon as the match was struck it was at optimum temp burn. Fantastic little burner and extremely compact. Must get some more Phantom Edited December 1, 2010 by Phantom Quote Link to post

pianoman 3,589
Hi Andy. Well lad, I won't say you are off your head but, I'll be watching the weather with a little more than concern for you mate. Cut plenty of kindling and keep it dry in your tent mate. If you bag anything with your rifle, that's bonus I reckon. ATB Simon Quote Link to post
mikeyblue 28
Hi Andy, Hope you have a cracking time pal, you may need some thermals! Where in Derbyshire you camping, im up in Buxton and there is a lot of snow about bud! Have a good un, Mikey. Quote Link to post
gurtwurz 793
that gel works great if poured over your kindling wood as well, and again its light, and safe mate( oops!! bein mum again!) how are you doing your bivvy andy? we get our students to do one thats open at the front and build their fire about a big pace in front, then build a fire reflector behind it so you dont have to build a massive fire(and therefore avoid burning your bivvy down around your ears!), and all the heat is reflected back at you, which saves you hunting for loads of firewood in the dark as simon said tho, keeping your kindling under cover is essential, its also worth raising it off the ground as well, even if its only on a platform of sticks, as the ground'll get it both wet and cold, and therefore harder to light, which you defo wont want at night and when your cooling down after getting the wood in the first place. hope you have an ace night buddy, all the best, wurz Quote Link to post
