is he earning his crust

Recommended Posts

Over the years lets just say I've led a very varied and somewhat dubious lifestyle though the one constant in my life has been running dogs,if it wasn't for me having dogs in my life then I'd hate to think where I'd be now!

So in answer do my dogs earn their keep?Mine do as they give me a quality of life and experience no other hobby or pastime can come near to :thumbs:

Like that reply,interesting, :hmm::thumbs:

If i could sell what my dogs caught then yes i would say they do earn their keep but for me i have the dogs i have now purely for my own pleasure, i love nothing more than going out with them and watching an adrenaline rushing course and hopefully a catch, i don't have my dogs to work for me as such but to enjoy each others company in the field and give me some good sport, although if they didn't catch now and again i would certainly be annoyed!! :whistling::D

i have mates that spend a couple of hundred in a weekend goin out.so the few quid i spend on the dogs doesnt count.the day i cant spend what i need to on them or it gets about money then ill quit.keep the dogs the best and theyll be the best

Theres been times when ive been totally skint,the dogs always got fed first,they where then able to put a bit of coin in the pocket with what i sold,the extra money put food on the table on more than one occasion.I care little what the dogs cost me they give me more satisfaction and pleasure than anything else money can buy.The biggest mistake my 1st wife made was giving me a choice "her or the dogs".

Yep, as has been said, an interesting topic BUT is it 'his' crust or 'my' crust and would that crust be to buy his food or put mine on the table? If it's his grub, then really they could cost nothing to keep, hell i've owned crackers that were fed from the slop bins of school dinners! If we are adding everything that could come with owning a running dog, then that could add up to a pretty penny!

I suppose the only way I can answer is, that what I own now 'could' earn his crust and his keep in every way but that would be firstly down to me changing my 'style' of hunting. Yep, he 'could'.. and thats all i could say, because i'm pretty sure the dog IS capable but it'd be all speculation...

Dog's i've owned past, then again, yep, i've owned capable, i'm not one of the old 'profit hunters' but they made me decent money, on a regular basis too, BUT I do know the pitfalls of that life and there are many.

Though what I will say on the subject, is that there is no more man I admire more in the world of lurchers that those who have earned a living off their dogs. Tough on the people, hell on dogs, but really, IMO, the real vocation of the lurcher..... Provision, pure and simple! ;)
