TEXICAN 10
That should do it, just make sure to keep them on the anibiotics for atleast 7 days you want to run a complete cycle. If you stop early the bacteria can become immune to the antibiotic and come on even stronger. "It's the same as kicking a big guy when he's down your just making sure he stays there" Also if there is major swelling use azium aka dexamethazone it is an anti-inflamatory steroid it's very easy to use but only use it for about the first 3 days or even sooner if the swelling goes away. As far as puncture wounds I use 1 gallon of hot water 1 cup of bleach and 1/2 teaspoon of antibacterial soap and sponge the damaged areas really well. Best of luck, YFIS, the TEXICAN. mart 131
never used antibiotics or penicillin, just rinsed with fresh water, sometimes saline solution. dogs are usually fit for fight again after a few days, so i stay away from penicillin/antibiotics unless its something major, as the bateria can get resistant if you overuse it as well. rob84 112
What i do and gereally most of the boys that i go with do is wash down the head with a sponge and some water to get the gereral dirt away. then wash again with salt water or detol, dry the head off. put dry cow cream into the cuts and if theres any nasty ones put a few stapes in to hold the cuts together so that they heal better. once the stapels are in put the dry cow nosle to one side of the staple and squese the stuff in. Give the dog a good drink of water and then it goes back into the box. We have started using metacam its a liquid thats thats squited down the dogs throat. It acts as a painkiller and it stops with the swelling its expensive but very good stuff!

That's exactly what I do: any of those antibiotic mastitis creams are brilliant; attack the infection at source rather than flooding the whole body with antibiotics. Carprieve, Rimaydyl (same thing) tablets are better than Metacam IMO: you can measure the dose more accurately: too much of any of those anti-inlfammatories cum painkillers can cause liver problems, especially over a period of time. bullmastiff 615
I wash the cuts/punctures out with a 10ml/100ml Hibiscrub/water solution and thats about it. If the swelling comes up too much or is affecting the dogs then I give one 50mg tablet of Rimadyl twice a day for two days. That usually does the trick. Never had an infected bite yet. MissRhianL 70
I think the answer to your question is each to their own. Personally, if my dog gets bitten quite badly, a jab of penicillin to fight off any sort of infections that might develop. If you dont have access to this, household antibiotics will do the trick. Be sensible with the dosage for the right size dog. make sure you clear the area with warm salt water normally does the trick or TCP or antiseptic spray. Do it for a few days it will gradually clear up and reduce any swelling.

I have used antibiotics probably about a dozen or so times in 20 odd years of working dogs. If your dogs are healthy let there own defences do the work, with the help of a little cleaning.
