Trigger 26
thanks for the replies so far. it interesting to see that people so far are saying they a dog to have had at least 4 seasons under there belt before they consider them tried and tested, but what of those dogs that have done less seasons but more work and are still doing it, surely they are more tried and tested and allready proven to be good dogs. And some dogs mature earlier than others too, not until hes reached about 4 years old , with still 4 good feet under him, then i think hes tested enough for me, Quote Link to post

macker 5
in reality the chances of having one top class dog and one top class bitch in your yard at the same time is hard and can also have a short life so chances have to be taken some times. in real life most people dont wait as long as what is said in this topic five years of hard graft can be two years graft to another for me its watching the dog work and making your mind up. can be easy to see that some just have that little bit more go and ability. if i had a real good bitch that i would be lost with out but was only 3 it would not bother me at all to breed off her to have a pup for backup mack Quote Link to post
poacher3161 1,766
A good 3 seasons before breeding then again breeding lurchers can be more trouble than its worth in the present climate.I would breed a springer at two years old if i was happy with its working ability Quote Link to post
Trigger 26
three seasons of driving round all night and slipping the dog out the window 15-20 times a night is the only way to truly test a dog i expect to catch between 15-20 rabbits a night, i dont think that 15-20 runs a night is realy testing a dog. littletimmy 71
4 to 5 seasons but some people think its 1 that long? Some people breed the bitch on her first season at 9 months Quote Link to post
Daveo 61
I had a dog, died during his second season, did everything i wanted and more I wish i had pup off him, Where do you draw the line? if i had bred off him i would have been slated as it was i never got chance. Best dog i ever had the privilege of running Quote Link to post

whin 463
2 good full season is enough for a good dog ,a bitch well until you need a replacement i try and breed if they are doing the biz once when 4 see what the pups are like if good then 6 , but i have saw first season dogs doing al thats needed to be good for me ,but not many like thaT ,i like a dog to catch in the lamp put a good show in the daylite, work an eye 2 hundred yards ,away catch out the beam ,clean kill dog etci like a dog that knows the biz ,with being out all the time and you dont need to say much to him he knows what the game is full stop , Quote Link to post
