General Walkabout

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Have been out almost everday recently as I'm back for the easter holidays and go shooting either AM or PM depending on when I'm working. Havent had much joy in terms of kills as the rabbits are only just appearing again really and have just been unlucky with the pigeons. Not to say I havent had fun or learnt anything in the process ;)

Popped out yesterday and had a bit of a session on calculating my mildots etc on the new scope, just getting comfortable with them to ensure maximum accuracy etc...

I looked in the boot of my car and found my mates old crow decoy, so for fun thought I would take it with me, after a good target session I walked up to the farm yard, where I have noticed lots of crows landing on this area of mud, (observed from hundreds of meters away) I decided to sit down hidden i nthe tree's and put out the decoy (forgot bait) just for 30 mins to see how it went. Previous attempts of hiding in a hedge even with a camo net meant they somehow spotted us and wouldnt land. However after setting it out at 25 meters I sat down and waited. Within not long the squaking began and a 2 landed at around 30 metres. Scope was just finding its place and they took off realising something was up.

I thought I may of had something going so waited it out a bit longer and had some more interest. Then all hell broke loose. Two groups of about 20 crows started having it out over the top of my decoy, it just the all aggitated and a few social tensions may have errupted hahaha!

However none landed and why should they? I hadnt brought any bait...

Good thing is I'm going to use this spot probably later properley with a eaten chicken carcass or something. Its all learning! Shall I have the decoy looking as if its eating the carcass or just nearby to create a sense of securiuty??

I then decided to head to my pigeon spot, they werent in the tree's when I got there which is good, so I can wait for them as its near impossible to get to the hide without them all taking off.

I experimented with the shots at the tree's. The closest tree's I paced at 35 metres, so in theory I should be 1 and threequaters a milldot under, yet the angle was steep, but also a long distance..... I think that the only way to work this all out is to experiment and get used to your setup. Bellow is a picture of the infamous pigeon tree's.

I'm having to rush this as I need to head to work, but I waited in the hedge, (which has ANOTHER dead sheep next to it, I will spare you guys the photo its not nice) lots of pigeons came in, none close nough however and I soon got tired of waiting in the rain and went to check elsewhere.

I'm popping back after work this afternoon so hopefully make some kills. I will finish off with just a few picture of the permission.

I said I wouldnt upload this but oh well!

On that sunny afternoon the other day I wondered what the stench in my hide was, only to look around and find this o nmthe otherside of the hedge. Second dead sheep there in a few weeks, its not a field I have permission on, so I havent consulted the farmer, I wonder if its the dying corner for the old sheep!?

ENJOY!

Jack

p.s Click on pictures to see a decent size, (probably not advisable for the sheep though!)

Hey Si :D

Nice site that, I could put those into my calls into my pocket computer and on my phone

Seriously I don't think its legal to use a recording to bring them in is it?

But what I wanted to say was :notworthy: Thank You Sir :notworthy: thats a great little resource indeed.

One thing I would say to other airgun hunters (newbies mainly) though, is that the printable target has two kill zones on it. I would not actually aim at the body kill zone using an air rifle  concentrate on the head one

hi jack

nice write up and pics buddy

you may want to let the other farmer know about his dead sheep! and it may lead to more permission

you may want to get up before sun up! set your decoys out with bait! get ya mag set on the lowest, and keep ya head on the scope as soon as you see crow activity.this way you will not need to try and get your aim when they have landed,as you will already be there!

good luck buddy

regards

Looks like some nice land there to Mooch round, a old Sheep carcasss like that could well bring in the odd Carrion crow for a feed or Magpie which provide some sport, it looks like a few things have had a pull at it aswel includeing Charlie....
