milo 74
What would you say the ideal power should be when going for a clean kill with an air rifle .22 or .177 spring/pcp,and at what range i.e. 11ft lb 30 yds,ive just bought in a .22 hw95 firing at 10ft lb,i shot a crow at 25yds and the fu..just dropt off the roof but was still alive and kicking...im a bit concerned at its power to be honest thanks. Phantom 631
Nice one Davy ol'e boy So nice to know there are people like you willing to advise, show and help improve anothers shooting skills :notworthy: 10 ft/lbs is more than enough to kill at ranges of up to 50 or even more yards, IF your Marksmanship skills are up to it Head shots (well brain shots technically) are your best bet Nice to see your seeking the info you need to get a cleaner kill and not just bragging Respect to you milo Phantom Quote Link to post
aaronpigeonplucker 32
with a pcp 45 yrds max. with a springer (for me anyway) 35 yrds max. always go for headshots. Quote Link to post

andyfr1968 772
I've not had much to do with corvids for a long time but when I last did, I used .177 with Baracudas and never had any problems takeing them with body shots. I know I may get some stick for this but it worked very well for me. Cheers. Quote Link to post

There is nothing wrong with body shots IF your marksmanship skills are good enough to hit the heart and lungs and you are CONFIDENT doing it. I only take headshots, because I wouldn't like to try and place a heart lung shot. I have done them in the past and they have been good ones (bunnies dont make it more than 7 feet or so) but I personally I am more confident of hitting the brain than I am of the hitting the heart. jackinbox99 41
Effective range is all dependant upon how good / accurate you are with the gun! Id set up some 1inch targets over 25->45 yards and see how you get on. Personally I dont use my PCP for more than 45yard max, with most shots being around the 30->40yard distance. I know I could probably kill upto 55yards+, but at that distance you have to be super accurate and other factors such as wind have a greater impact. Quote Link to post

Remember Milo, we are all here to encourage and help others get it right as well as learn from others. Well done to you Sir, you will make a great Marksman and Hunter with your attitude Phantom Quote Link to post
jusar whippets 10
I would like to see a rabbit hit and drop at 50+ yards with 10ft lb Why push the envelope to the max and risk distressing the quarry? I have 11.5ft and will only go to 40 yds max as i know then i could get a clean kill. I have shot at 50 yds and dispatched cleanly, but only when there was zero wind and i knew the holdover precisley. Just my opinion that's all, but fairplay to the fella for taking the advice Quote Link to post
