JohnGalway 1,043
I was on the British Farming Forum earlier, saw this below posted. I'm seriously impressed with that level of PR, apparently this is a Prime Time TV advert in the States. Reckon it puts this side of the pond to shame really. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7A4oAyKOGHg

MuttleMcTuttle 21
The UK government consider farmers to be a necessary evil, they just want them to keep the countryside looking tidy and pretty, full of lots of little furry feathery things for the day trippers to go "oooh" and "ahhh" over. Bugger food production, we can buy all that cheap GM, factory farmed, mycotoxin riddled crap from other countries. Hmmm Monsanto... real movers and shakers when it comes to genetically modified crops. Now where can we grow that? Oh, there's this bit of rain forest that no one's using... IanB 0
Farming is very underestimated especialy in Britain nowdays. BUT the bottom line is every Nation in the world need to bring in laws like China limiting the amount of children born for every man and woman because if we cant reverse the population explosion of the last 50 years we are all f****d. In essence we are RAPING the planet and the planet cant sustain this. I predict mass famine, hunger and disease. Wars will be fought over water and food not oil. We WILL be the cause of our OWN dimiese because as a species we are destructive and greed orientated. Agree totally max
Nik_B 3,791
The way those american farmers do it is by using GM seed and factory farming. NOt so great in my opinion. I'm no tree hugger but I dont want to eat meat from animals that are fed anti biotics and god knows what else to stop them developing disease. Those farmers are also getting paid shite money from what I've read, and they are over a barrel for years if they want to keep the deals with the companies that buy the meat/food. I know it's biased but have you watched 'Food Inc'?
Edd_Wiltshire 9
Yeah its all ecomomies of scale really. The farms out there are huge, we cannot compete with the sheer size of their operations. Machinery wise they are sorted. It also helps having mexican 'workers' who work through the day no matter how hot it is. When i was in arizona i played golf and those buggers worked through the day and it was sodding hot. I felt a little bad with my air conditioned golf bugger with a cool box full of drink on the front! Watched that Jimmy Doherty's farming show last month, he was in the states on a tomatoe farm, bloody hell the scale of that place was amazing. Not surprised that we cannot compete with food prices even when it is flown in!
JohnGalway 1,043
Perhaps I should have spent more time structuring the OP. I couldn't give a fig that Monsanto or GM is involved. That was never my point. That clip, I believe is an excellent bit of PR for American Farmers, showing them in a positive light in their own country. It shows what could be done over here, with a positive attitude. How the real face of farming (no complaints, not looking for money) can be put forth, and the benefits of farming can be shown to all. From producing high quality food to providing jobs and contributing to the economy. Or, let people continue to believe meat comes from the supermarket?

It's mostly vacant of people. If your government tells you not to have children. Have many. ATB

I would like to see kids learn where food comes from properly instead of visiting a petting zoo at a farm which is pretty much the closest they get. I supose thats why we have the fluffy bunny brigade in the first place. I read somewhere that there used to be a much closer link between town and countryside as the food used to literally walk in to town and people saw it in it's true form when the farmers brought it to market. These days we're so far removed from where our food comes from that there are people who will throw a banana away as it has a bit of black on it or not chose an apple because it has a funny shape. The nicest orange I've ever tastest looked horrible.
