smiffyuk2003 5
i have 2 lurchers both just over 4 month old, i take them out 3 times a day 1 big walk, were out about 45 mins they run about and fetch and basically tire them selves out, then 2 light walks 10 - 15 mins a time, mine live in my cellar and this also prevents them shitting everywhere aswell as getting them out for good exercise. i think what i do is fine, they thrive off it. love chasing the ball and sprinting about.. think you'll be fine with that, Quote Link to post

I'll second that, running a puppy behind a car will see it crippled before it reaches maturity. :wallbash: At 5 months a puppy needs to be out and about learning, it doesn't need fitness. What your doing Zippy sounds fine, socialisation, recall and retrieve training is way more important than fitness at that age, its how a puppy learns to grow into a well balanced and steady dog. Plus with the beardy in there at this age using its brain and getting mental stimulation would be far more effective that running it to death. Quote Link to post
killa-combo 142
daft running it off the car mate way to young, and dont realy like runnin off the car but ive not tryed it so carnt diss it.. ive a 6 month pup and carnt tire him out i walked him for 2 hours yesterday and he still wasnt tired after runing around the whole time with my other lurcher,,, i also take them for 15mins on the lead at night.. i do this every day but walk a diferent place each time as i get bored of the same route and like to have a ratch about for places to lamp Quote Link to post

wirral countryman 2,110
she knows the score don't be tempted to run your puppy to much, walk it everywhere you go and generally socialise it,it is more important to get your pup around farm stock and obedient.I have ran lurchers for over 30yrs and have never ran a dog behind a car, sounds dangerous to me and also lazy,a bicycle on hard ground is a good way to get a dog fit but only when it is a lot older, most puppy's carry a natural fitness till they finish growing, moderate exercise till mature or you will bend its back legs out of shape and ruin its heart and lungs, remember each dog is different depending on its size, the bigger the dog, the longer it will take to mature. Ginny Spinner 455
just walk them they will soon get sick of running about like headless chickens, one thing i will say is i definetly wouldn't be throwing the tennis ball that far and amount of times for a pup, theres a good chance you will sicken the pup, and could ruin its chances of retreiving when older. I would just recomend 3 or 4 under arms throws for it, this will keep it intrested. Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
Too little is better than too much at this age. Mine dont get out the garden untill about 5 months. Then gradually increace the walking but untill they are about 6/7 months i wouldnt emphasis on running them much at all. Permenant joint damage from over execrcise can show later in life. Take it easy bud. FTB Quote Link to post
