out with an air rifle

Recommended Posts

well couple days ago spoke to a few lads ref getting an air rifle, only a springer nothing fancy i hasten to add just something to get me going.i managed to get a smk-20 .22 with hawk airmak 3-9x40 scope, gun slip,500 pellets and a box of targets, complete package £200 so not bad.

well after getting my eye in, and then, missing as many of the targets as i was hitting lol, felt i was doing to much in one go also frustration was getting the better of me lol so put it away.

anyway took it out today, quick couple small 3 shot groups on the target, bang on so time to hit my permission.

done plenty plinking as a kid but as soon as i got to my permission i realised how different a ball game it is when you only got an air-rifle,every pigeon leaving the trees as i approached is allready a non-starter,and at one stage covinced myself "should of taken the 12 bore".

anyway found a nice bit of cover, where an old fir tree had been blown over in the recent gales and sat in nice and tight, was i cold no f*****g freezing, well i didnt have to wait long before a few magpies were chattering loudly in the tree tops so first oppertunity, pop and one in the bag.

after about half hour a squirrel caught my eye further down the tree line so left my cosy hide for hope at a shot, well the shot did come propper sitter aswell and i missed,it ran up the tree and out of site little f****r,so i moved further along the tree line to where it meets a stubble field, once again got in nice and tight on the tree line, within about half hour couple crows graced me with their presense high up in the trees, pop second kill well chuffed and more than ready i headed home.

allready planning my next trip out,its certainly not about numbers with the air-rifle,not that big bags has ever really bothered me,its just the whole thing, stalking about, getting into cover and a great deal of patience,so from someone that shoots a shotty regularly as well as ferreting and lamping i think iv just found another little past time i can carry out with this continueing bad weather and enjoy every bit of it.

sorry to bore the tits of you but hey i enjoyed myself and at 43(birthday yesterday lol)almost felt like a kid again
