Full metal jackets or hallow points

Recommended Posts

Hello all fellow shooters,

just would like to ask a few question if i could,

1,what is the differance between full metal jacket bullets 55gr and 55gr hollow points,

i have both bullets and would like to know if lads on here have shot with these,i was

told that the FMJ are not to be used on foxes as they dont do the same job as the

hollow points,so maybe someone on here can answer my questions,

Thank you in advance..........Bullx.

ps.i use these bullets in my Brno .223

FMJ does not expand, in the civilian world it's for target work only.

Hollow point is for foxes and stuff.

FMJ can kill a fox no problem but your shot placement has to be absolutely precise. Don't go there, that road leads to wounding.

fmj are ilegal to use on any animal you would lose your certificate

No, this is not correct. The only animal where this does apply is deer - the Deer Act specifically states that expanding ammunition must be used.

Other animals are afforded no such protection, and thus the use of FMJ is legal. In some circumstances it is a useful tool (though personally I wouldn't, I like being humane), for example shooting an animal where you intend to keep the pelt.

sorry but it was changed a few years ago you cant buy exspanding ammo if you dont have it on your certificate and it also states fmj is for target shooting only

no mate there is no law to say you cant use fmj on vermin or fox. its only deer that you HAVE TO USE EXPANDING ON.

anyway no need to use fmj on fox not only dont it do as good job. its also more dangerous as it tends to keep going after its hit one

your right you cant buy expanding if you dont have it on ticke.t but if your granted rifles for vermin control you will have it on there. the reason you got to have it on there is more then likely down to the fact if you have range shooting on your ticket and not vermin then expanding wouldnt be used for range work

Yep, that is exactly correct. What has not been mentioned yet is the fact that FMJ ricochets like 22r/f, and off of any surface including water, which is a good reason not to use it at all.

As has been said..FMJ is perfectly legal on ANY quarry except deer, but it really isn't the best way forward, if you have Vermin/fox etc on your FAC simply go back and ask for expanding ammo as well!!

ive used 155gn A max through my .308 very accurate

used them on live stuff clean kills there good !!

Yep, but that's actually an expanding round. The A-max is a tricky one - it's designated for targets, but is actually basically the same as v-max. They worked out that the high BCs of the bullets were good for target shooters too :)
