stubby 175
dont expect good results too soon, some ferts dont show good rabbiting skills till the following season Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
While you have some spare time before the season starts, try to get them running through some pipes, and get them used to being entered in to them, that way they dont dordle so much when you enter them in to a burrow Quote Link to post
lurcher lass 9
provide them with a space with as much room as you can afford with toys, tunnels etc i bring me kits out with me every now and again to wonder along new areas and get used to being next to the dogs and me walking boots, also helps to get them used to wearing the collor and maybe let them follow an experienced ferret doen the rabbit warren to begin with. . other then that let the animal learn at its own pace enjoy Quote Link to post

The one 8,589
I just let the kids play with them with pipes in the garden never had a sulker yet then take it slow with a older ferret checking the burrow after them and i wouldn't totally trust them working in there first year Quote Link to post
johnmac666 2
I just let the kids play with them with pipes in the garden never had a sulker yet then take it slow with a older ferret checking the burrow after them and i wouldn't totally trust them working in there first year ive got myselkf 2 kits & havnt worked ferrets since i was a young lad this is what ive been doing to help their instincts kick in i have included in there run pipes & tunnels, i take them out every day to different places to get used to being out & near dogs ( like another poster has said ) they come to me when i whistle , i would also say get them coming to you when called which will help when out in the feild i have just got to the stage of putting their collars on which is kind of funny, as they slide along the ground trying their hardest to get it off , its amazing how tight a collar can be put on a ferret, it took me a few goes to get it right but they stay on now & the kits dont try & get them off as much, have also got some pipe & covered it with an old purse net to get them used to getting through it without trashing it , when i start mine off im going to start them on small sets first, using my mates 3yr old to show em ,so to speak,i gave them a whole rabbit last week & they attacked its eyes & then set about playing tug of war with it, they seemed completely different , when i came to take the carcass out my hob tried to pull it through the pipe leading into the sleeping compartment so they know the smell, im just hoping they dont mess about too much as i know they probably wont come good till next year, a long steep learning curve for me, im a bit gutted i didnt get my hawk this year but i need to get the ferrets bolting bunnies before i place a hawk above them anyway i digress apologies didnt mean to hijack the thread just another begginer adding my two pence worth a.t.b with your season regards ..john Quote Link to post
