skycat 6,174
If the pup was brought up in a crate and has always toileted there then your'e going to have to find an alternative to a crate: the pup has been conditioned to go in the crate from a very early age and it will take a bloody long time if ever for it to overcome this conditioning. That's why if I have brought a pup in I always like them to have been born and raised in a kennel: that way they never associate peeing etc in a house. Could you not kennel the pup? Or shut it in a lobby/utility room or something when your'e not with it.

Doglost Co-Ordinator 4
She's been used to going in the crate. Same thing happens with some rescue dogs- they used to going on concrete so will wait til youve walked them miles then go to toilet when they get back home. Put the towel outside if thats what breeders did. When pup had something to eat/drink give it half hour then put it outside - dont shut door- use child gate if you got one. The way dogs getting nicked woud advise anyone leaving dog loose in garden/yard unsupervised. Tell it whatever word you want to use, praise when it goes. It shouldnt take long or use paper instead of towel. Put crate nearer door then move paper over a few days from crate to outside. It wont take long- just getting them used to what you expect
awen 30
its sounds a bit mad but if you have no other dogs for him to learn off walk him outside and go for one yourself hell soon pick it up, worked for me everytime
lurcher lass 9
i'd say to lose the towel in the crate as the dog is now used to toileting on this type of materiel, i would recommend changing the type of bedding, i used a paper/wool pet bedding for the pups in the crate as its soft and lovely for the dogs and easy to remove soiled bedding without using washing machine etc.. and get in to a routine of set times during day AND night to be taking the dog to the loo and plenty of praise when the pup goes outside, even if its only one in thirty and never tell the dog off for toileting indoors no matter how irratating this is as the dog just gets nervous... all the best mate lurcher lass xxx
