RicW 67
Right now this is all theory. A few days ago I was talking to a friend of mine. Turned out he has a permission over 200 acres to shoot pheasant. The owner of the land really dislikes wild boar - and we've got a lot of 'em in East Sussex! He will welcome anyone with a big centrefire who can stalk the boogers down. SO WHAT do I go for? The Home Office site says that the minimum calibre for wild boar is .270 Even that's marginal! Looks to me like .257 Weatherby Magnum. It's gotta be a stalking gun that I can carry around. Ric Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
.308 should do the job for you, plenty of choice of ammo, popular calibre, easy to reload for, plus plenty choice of rifle manufacture's out there too... Quote Link to post
Sterry 0
I second SS there, i know here in kent the police say the minimum is .308 for boar and the ones i've seen shot with one dont show too much meat damage either. Quote Link to post
flytie 1
.308 x 160gn ........ As per radio 4 last week, in your area too. Dropped on the spot. You might get your FEO to play ball on a smaller calibre, some do, most don't. ft Quote Link to post

SportingShooter 0
Spanner in the works, a friend down that way uses a 30-30 Winchester Quote Link to post
andyfr1968 772
.270 minimum? Why so big?? Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
.270 minimum? Why so big?? Very tough skin on a boar and when wounded they can be quite aggressive and violent. You want them Dead in other words Quote Link to post
andyfr1968 772
Yeah, I know. But all the same, it seems a little overkill. .222, .223 or .243 would seem to be more than enough for an animal of that size. Cheers. Edit to say: 30 30's little more than a large pistol round. I wouldn't like to trust a .222 or .223 for a Boar, its just too heavy set and the skin will take away a great deal of the energy. .243 is probably just about the minimum for a decent shot. clivej 0
I was reading that anything with a velocty above 2800 FPS will do. So that rules out the 308. Edited May 29, 2009 by clivej Quote Link to post
shottyscotty 3
try 30 - 06 that would do the job Quote Link to post
Yokel Matt 918
MINIMUM .243 but in experianced hands for piggies. Anything smaller is not sensible - I certainly don't fancy following up on a wounded wild boar, they don't f**k around and will have you if you're not careful. Quote Link to post

A wounded 200lb boar could have you down and dead before you can get off a 2nd shot. They give .270 as minimum, recommend at least 7mm(.280), m/e 2800 ft.lbs. Quote Link to post
danebrewer10 6
yup as others have said, I's shoot a .308, a big 180 gn nosler partition ot bonded bear claw would dish the dirt Spanner in the works, a friend down that way uses a 30-30 Winchester err SS are you sure that when he says boar he dosen't mean feral pigs? as they're quite a bit smaller than o'l Sus scrofa in europe....
