Hi all When making snares for hoop snaring i make them out of 4 strand because they get so tangled up on the legs of the hoops, so they get respun after use. My question to you is when making snares for use with tealers do you make them out 6 strand as i think they are easier to reset or 4 stands as they easier to make. Your thoughts regards Roger

Would this have anything to do with this being her first year of rising a litter. regards Roger.

I have recounted the age of the kits and they are seven weeks, I read in a book that they are supposed to stay with the mother until 12 weeks as they are still learning from her. So you think at sevens week i should remove the jill? regards Roger.

Hi all, One of my jills had 12 kits this year. Its the first time i have chosen to breed as i usually get them from other people. Anyway. Over the last couple of weeks i have been losing kits and now there are only five left. The last one looked like is had been squashed and had difficulty breathing. I'm i doing some thing wrong or is this just whats happens sometimes. I know about natural selection but is there anything i can do in the short term to help the remaing kits which are about 7 weeks old. Regards Roger

If you are going to make a longnet the first mistake many make is too many meshes. Longnets are only on the whole less mess wide. 12 to 13 meshes is the norm depending on the mesh size you use. I have not bothered to mention salvages before anyone jumps on board. There are loads off threads on here telling you this. If you make them the same width as a purse net they will be too deep and heavy to carry and take so long to make. I do make ditch nets @ 18 meshes wide but they are usually 12 yd tops and they are an arse to uses because they are so deep regards Roger

I use any waterbased wood preserver ie ronseal / BQ type. The nets if you dip them completed become stiff when dry. They sofen during a days ferretting with the damp weather so you won't notice over an undipped net. Over time the nets do sofen as they get broken in so to speak. I think that even if the inside if the knot is not dipped they still dry quicker and it is this time scale of drying nets which will effect how long they last "weak point or not". If you make a net with dipped hemp "so you are treating the inside of the knot" you tend to find that the dipped hemp sofens duri

Are you talking about when ferreting or are you taking about longnetting at night. I think that is the first question to ask? Regards Roger

Blimey Netrigger that's a fine web u have there. You must be a fast knitter if it only took 3 weeks off and on. I takes me 6 weeks full slog to make a completed 50yd hemp net dripped on the lines with the end rings. I wouldn't i was the slowest at knitting either. regards Roger. P.S and thats with no salvage as well.

The problem with a net that is 17 meshs wide is that you will trip over it when setting and picking up the net. You will be trailing net on the floor picking up as much debris as you are trying to remove from the net. I would suggest making the 17 mesh net into a kinda ditch net. and restarting your long net at 12 / 13 /14 meshs tops depending on the size of mesh board you are using and of cause the material that you are knitting with. if you are making a hemp net weight is a major factor that is why they are 1 2 / 13 meshes @ 2 and quarter in mu opinion. I now make them with 4ply as y

Hi 17 meshes wide wow, that is wide they are usually about 12 to 14 wide mucker, there are also a few threads about how to ensure that your longnet runs straight. Regards Roger

Hi I have a pair of spey muckboots and i think they are the best boots for not that much money. http://www.graniteworkwear.com/p/p-Spey_Muck_boots-133.aspx They do get a bit mashed up by barbwire fences and such but they are still water proof and i have had mine for a couple of seasons. They are so warm that sometime it feels like your feet are going to over heat in them. They are good. Regards Roger, P.S if you look at my profile pic what to you think I am wearing, apart from a f**ing great coat!!!

I wish it was as simple as that these days, I really do Regards Roger.

I have just finished a job in some woodland many of the rabbits caught where in wood piles and 8 came of of a bomfire, I guess what i am trying to say is there are place or sets that can be done with ferrets where you can't gas. Don't blow the women out. Go and have a look. Look for sets where you can't gas for example near water courses, rubbish tips, building. Fallen tree stumps. Just check with her where and when it was gassed. I bet there will be areas you can ferret safely. regatds Roger.

Hi all, Aluminium phosphide becomes inert in a relitavely short period of time. I would say that the gas would be over and done with within 24 to 48 hours depending on how porous the soil is. Thats not to say that i would put my ferrets down that soon just to be on the safe side. Just as a casing point if the holes have been gassed there should be no holes open to put your ferrets down anyway. Have to say I don't use gas at this time of year if I can help it. I wait till there is better weather when it is not so wet. Regards Roger. P.S you have to remember also that the tab

For me it started with a conversation down the pub with my brother saying i have seen how two different pest control companies work and i saw the good and bad in both small and large companies . We talked about what if i could setup a pest control company, would i do it. I said yes My brother loaned me some money to setup and i haven't look back since. Was hardwork but got there in the end. regards Roger

Thanks for the advice Roger, are you suggesting that to get the experience i try and work for a company to start. There again would they take me on with no experience ? Thanks for the pointer to the journals il defo take a look at them. Cheers bob We all had to start somewhere, I had no experience. Many of the large companies have there own in house training. The first company i worked for was a small pest control company where i learnt the basics and then moved to an much larger firm. You are always learning new stuff, all I'm saying I it not as idylic life style as some see

Heres my tip? Do not go for an RSH in pest control until you have at least 1 years expierence in pest control you will struggle on the course. This course is designed for people that have had some industrial experience , it not just rats and mice. In my opinion you would be better to subscribe to some of the journals ie Technician today and Pest Control News there you will find many entry courses to suit and work your way up to the BPCA and RSH qualifications. I think working for a big boys will test your metal, They always have jobs because they have such a high turn over of staff
