Making a 4 ply hemp net 75yds long would you recommend a double salvage finish to it or would it be ok with out one. Just thinking about the extra bulk on th end pins thats all. Regards Roger

Does anyone out there in longnet land use some form of trolley. I have two 100yd quickset with baskets and all. They are so heavy you end up making so much noise carrying them that i through some form of trolley might be a help. How on earth do you chaps run 300yds to 400yds without killing yourselfs. Regards Roger.

Get a tent it could be a long night.

Mapreader has a good point about if you are still knitting of the ring. I never start knitting from a ring because this will throw it but at six yards or so the ring wouldn't affect the net so much. Mapreader is right about working on only about a yard of the net or so. Put the rest of the net in a box and forget about it and concentate on the next yard or so. People give up on making long nets because they are more intrested on how much they have made or haven't amde. Just think about making the next yard of net right and continue from there. Ianrob is also right about at the e

Two things could have happened to the net of the top of my head. The first is you have let knots slip. The second and most likely cause is the mesh board you are using is crap. If it is not total straight / even the meshes on one side of the mesh board can be slightly larger than the rest. As the net becomes longer the uneven meshes become more noticable. Solution. New mesh board or straighten up the one you have. Or when you tie each knot tie it at the same location on the mesh board or turn the mesh board around to attempt to staight the net again. Best bet is knit from

There you go 1 hob to 2 Jill team

Julia Well all yours are girly show ferrets so that says it all

Ferrets love to be together, most of the time. You would be better to have a couple. They can keep each other company and warm on a night. They are easy to keep in the winter. They can be a handful during the summer when they go into season so be mindful of which sex to get. And look after them and monitor them during the season, it's only right. Me I like hobs for working even thought they do knock the odd net of the holes. I'm working them alot at the moment so letting them have day off is so important and this can affect the total numbers ferrets to have. I like to get one new ferr

Don't ever gut them, they all go to the game dealer and they do all that messy stuff. I feed entire rabbits to ferrets. So I have to go on feel. Regards Roger. P.S never mastered the art of cooking rabbit but I guess thats another thread.

magnum trap company do good ones

Good one. What length of nets where you running? Regards Roger

All very good points. I have also heard to feel the rabbits tummys of the ones you have all caught to get an indication of whether they have been out feeding for long or not. One area i have been ferreting intensively has now had two longnetting seasons and i only caught three. The rape is growing ok as well so i think my mission is complete. All I have to do is look at a couple more fields but they never have the wind in the right direction so i guess i might have to do a follow up ferreting season on this area to complete the job. Regards Roger.

In your opinion. Whats the earliest time to go out longnetting at this time of year? Tonight is windy wet and dark and its only 5:45pm your thoughts Regards Roger

Do you really need to harden them. I thought that was the whole idea of using hazel as it light when dried and quite tough anyway. Why complicate things? Dry them out point them and if you really feeling really posh round the tops of them. As for grooves why bother. I just use castartion rings. Opps let a secret slip there.

Anything that is water based ie the stuff you put on your fences, obviously some types are better than others ronseal sprayable stuff is really good but is expensive. Its almost like a plastic coating to start but soon sofns up. Nets last longer if still cared for. They are easy to see in vegitattion if you use a sensible colour and it seals the fibres so they run of the vegitation rather than getting stuck. The only down side is it bulk up your kit bagt but i thinks but as you dont lose nets as much.

So putting them on a radiator is a no no then. Interested in this artificeall heat thing. Don't like the idea of trashing my nets. Also if you dry them out this way they go crusty and don't run out as well. I use mine so often during the season that they tend to do most of there drying out in the field. They are dipped in wood preserver so dry so much quicker than hemp alone.

Hi Made some hemp nets that are 4ft in length. They are all the same mesh size made with the same mesh board. Now i dipped a couple of them in wood preserver and i am sure that once they had dried, they are shorter by about 1/2". I thought that natural materials like hemp and cotton don't stretch unlike nylon but can they shrink if they get wet for the first time???? Any thoughts regard Roger

Sounds like dodgy hemp to me. Good stuff doesn't break that easily.

Read it again net whatever i said struggle as much. They hit the net and struggle for a short period of time then sit quite!!! What does Ed Cook use??? 2 1/2" hemp. And he's rabbit friendly kinda guy i guess.
-
Round these part of the woods its hard longnetting at the moment. The wind is not windy enough and you can be heard miles off. So by the time the weather improves to net at night the majority of the a rabbits are big ones anyway so a 2 1/2" knot to knot seems fine for nightwork. This type of net is not what u use for ferreting until after xmas and then only for a short time because rabbit being rabbits!!!!!!! And you are right it has to be hemp or a natural material because it doesn't stretch. Do you not think that rabbit sit quite in a net at night so don't struggle as much as when fe

Currently making a 2 1/2" net in 4ply for longnetting at net. The net you have sounds to not have enough bag in it. If you reduce the length of the 100yd to say 75yd the bag would really tangle your rabbits up.......or add a bit more to it. A good net to use on the cold dark winters nights. Regards Roger. Seem to be quicker to make than a 2 1/4" nets i use when ferreting.

Hi Hard question to answer but as a rule it down to personal preference. I like to use hand make hemp nets but many use nylon and cotton and so on. I think many people will advise you to read a book or two and then you will have a better idea on what type of net to make or buy and the size length /mesh size depth of net. I would personally start with as short net to start so that you get some experiance on picking up the nets. I never use nets over 50 yards unless it's a quickset or a drop net type. If any of what i have said doesn't make sence read a book. or trawl the threads

Hi All Just lost my favourate Jill called Olga. She was an albino and my best worker. Didn't think i was soft enough to get upset about the loss of a ferret but i am. I have a funny feeling and that the rest of the court new. They were making a noise that i have never heard them make before. She was a rescue so i didn't really know how old she was. In the end she had massive water retension and was skinny on her back and chest. Vet wasn't sure what was wrong with her. So If you have any ideas let me know. Regards Roger

The way that netrigger has showed to start a long is really complicated and is really faffy to start. A better way in my option is to start the meshs on a loop of string adding the number required and whenthe long net is long enough cut the looped string and pull it free from the meshes. God if that make any sence at all Regards Roger

Can ferrets delay pregnecy like some other animals? Sound like its going to have to be a trip to the vet. well it cost me 30 quid to have them confirm there was a dead kit inside the jill & the drugs to help her pass it, money well spent imo She is worth it so will book her in tomorrow.
