  1. Sounds like a bloody daft cross to me Wouldn't you just end up with a dog who couldn't really catch anything but would quite likely bite you at some point?? Worst cross I've heard about was a lucher x long haired dachshund How stupid is that?
  2. Hiya Scallywag - haven't I seen you somewhere before? And you too Martin I'm from Toronto originally. We are definately more cultured than the yankees, and we're nicer, we're cooler, and the only folks who say aboot are those who live in the boonies. We can travel anywhere and be welcomed because we're NOT american Also we don't generally carry guns around because we just might fancy shooting someone Thanks for the welcomes all
  3. Definately sounds like an infection .... off to the vet.
  4. Um, is the pic taken in Gawthorpe? 'Cause I live bout a mile from there or so from there
  5. Gorgeous dog! That's not Pendle Hill in the background, is it?
  6. Mine is 14mths old now, and has chased sheep. Thankfully he didn't get caught or do any damage. I don't have much chance to get him round livestock so I get pretty nervous when he spots something. I really wish I could get someone to let me take him out to break him correctly. Certainly woundn't wack my dog round tho' doesn't usually teach them much.
  7. Best to say nowth if ya cant say good. This is the clown who runs 8mtn old pups on hares. are you referring to me ? if so the 8month old pup killed the hares it ran , anyway you a little wanker that knows nowt Isn't it more about the fact that an 8mth pup shouldn't be running that hard so young? A dog that age is still growing and running them hard is asking for trouble. They get more injuries, unless you don't much care if they get injured It's not about weather he's killed the hares at 8mths, it's about ensuring they're fit, sound an well trained. Or so I thought.
  8. Was that of the International Falconry Forum? (the pic of the blue/grey lurcher's side?) No was on a rescue forum - tbh I was so busy being gobsmacked my the dogs' injuries I can't remember what colour it was Might be the same one tho.
  9. Nice looking pup but doesn't suit Socks. I like Sugar actually. How charming
  10. Erm, it's just my ignorance on the entire subject really - how do they kill them when the do it properly? So far he just brings them to me and drops them, but this is after he's done his lap of honour with them in his mouth, hanging by the back. Someone told me that ruins them? Don't know mate, just have to ask! I'm not at all bothered about killing them myself but I do want to do it in the most humane way. Believe me, I've got three kids and used to be a vet nurse, there's very few things in this world that can make me squeemish
  11. IMO anyone who kicks/beats their dogs has no respect for how dogs learn and communicate - only seems to make the small minded feel they're tough or something stupid like that. I got my lurcher as a family pet knowing full well what he was actually bred for. He comes from excellent working stock but I never intended to work him mostly 'cause I didn't have the time or knowledge. Seeing him with my kids, watching him run, just sharing my home with him, all these things have made me realize how superior these dogs are to so many other breeds. I've had my share of different breeds including a w
  12. For every answer ... more questions! What is a priest (I'm assuming I don't need to abduct one from the local RC church)? How do I teach him to shake the bunny by the neck? How do I do the team thing with him? I don't mean to be a pain asking all these questions but the truth is I've got three very young kids so my reading time is limited - I know the info is out there if I can spend the time looking for it but whenever I sit down at the puter the kids climb me like monkeys Makes concentrating a bit difficult ...!
  13. I'm totally green at this hunting thing, and I could use some basic tips on getting into this with my lurcher. So just a few questions to start with: 1. Is there a way to train him to kill his rabbits cleanly and quickly, instead of him skipping excitedly over to me carrying the bunny by it's back? 2. What am I supposed to do when I get to where I'm goin? I went out with him yesterday and found myself standing around at the edge of a field while he lept through the long in that lurcheresque style... bunnies? [bANNED TEXT] bunnies? I felt like a plonker standing there doing nowt. 3. Wha
  14. I've seen pics on another forum of a lurcher who was nearly ripped in half by a muntjac - he had terrible injuries, loads and loads of stitches and drains etc. He was giving chase quite by accident I believe. Never seen or even heard of muntjac till I came to the UK but they sound like wicked little blighters.
  15. Hi There Just joined to start learning more about hunting with lurchers. My lurcher is 1 year old now, and last week he caught his very first bunnies I never really thought I'd want to encourage him to do it, but I have to say when he came out of the woods with that bunny in his gob I was really excited. He's caught a couple over the last few days, always bringing them straight to me but leaving the killing up to me But I think with the right instruction he's going to be very good at it. As I've not got a clue what I'm meant to be doing with him, I've come on here. I've got a lot to le
