if you could change one thing with your dog.

The start he had in life -
Mine will chase anything! He knows the difference (and you can see he knows the difference), but he loves the lure. Keeps busting muzzles on it at the finish. He's a bit bully and therefore not the fastest but he's exciting to watch, he has a whale of a time, and fun is what it's about as far as I'm concerned. White collar Ooops (photo by Chris Doyle)

lurcher fittness
Fabapocalypse replied to suffolkpoacher's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
We bike with my dog, we use one of those gadgets you can get which attaches to the downstem and he runs in a harness. Few weeks ago, Saturday morning, we decided to bike to the local animal food store to pick up a couple of bits, 3.5 miles each way. We were nearly there when we were overtaken by a woman in a car, who was in the shop when we got there. This is in the depths of the boonies of Suffolk. I got to the till, paid for my stuff, had a chat with the shopkeeper and went outside again. As we stood there loading stuff into various pockets, the woman who had overtaken us came ou -
I live in a small town, and not commenting on the accuracy of the story itself, but a few years back a friend and I were walking along one bin night when we saw what we thought was a stray dog sniffing at a bag... she chirruped at it and it came nearer. It wasn't a dog, but a fox... it trotted along around us for a bit and took dog treats that I threw for it. It wasn't at all worried by my JRT, on the lead, going mental and doing chainsaw impressions. We saw it several times over a couple of months of a very cold winter; it was in very good condition, wasn't afraid of dogs or people at all

I'm not a mod, but I think if you edit your post and replace the capital letters in the opening image tags with lower case letters the photos should show up okay. Hope this helps!

Lure coursing - harmless fun or ........
Fabapocalypse replied to david2363's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I personally can't see the harm in doing something like lure coursing or straight racing just for fun; I wouldn't travel miles to do it or take it seriously, but me and the dog have had a lot of enjoyment out of it, and I hope we carry on doing so. Not everyone wants to hunt and not everyone who wants to hunt can, so lure racing and lure coursing is an outlet; it's exercise and fresh air for owner and dog, if nothing else. I can remember seeing lurcher obedience classes at the bigger shows a few years back; not seen one put on for a while now but I suppose they're not as exciting to wa -
whats wrong with owners of bull xs
Fabapocalypse replied to lurcherpup's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
It's funny watching a non bull-cross person judging a bull-cross class... Firstly they will have avoided placing anything with obvious bull blood in any of the other classes. Then in the bull-cross class, first place will go to a dog that looks like it's not been any closer to bull blood than seeing one in the park once. Just to prove that the judge "isn't prejudiced" against bull-crosses, second will go to something heavy and lumbering and so huge it is actually scary. The rest of the places will go in order of the judge's favourite colours. But it's all a laugh and hopefully the -
"Aggression to other dogs in situations outside the house is pretty normal dog behavior. Appropriate behavior. Since your dog will be on lead or inside a secure fence at all times, there should be no problem with dogs outside your household. " That's just one of a good few points in the article open to question. If you click on the link to the author's name, she's the director of a canine fertility centre. So she needs all the testicles she can get. Pinch of salt time, I think. Neutering shouldn't affect a dog's working ability provided it's not done too young and they're kep

Taking on adult lurchers or training pups
Fabapocalypse replied to Casso's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I've heard it said that you choose a pup, but an adult dog chooses you (or not!). -
Who's "they"? Why don't "they" want the RSPCA knowing where they live? Do "they" have something to hide then? Whoever "they" are it seems like "they" neither know nor care what happens to their dogs. Which is what this thread was originally about, not that you can tell that by now. The case of the over-the-wall dog was that a lady heard a vehicle pull up beside her house; a car door opened, something making an awful screaming noise was then hurled over her 6ft garden fence, landing in a heap unable to support itself. A car door then closed and the vehicle drove away. That was the lurch

Have to agree with TracyB. I work with a lurcher rescue and to be honest, the dogs that come to us in the worst condition are the obvious "workers" or at least those that seem to have been trialled and found wanting. This is of course in no way suggesting that there aren't also "pet" lurcher owners who also discard their dogs or treat them wrongly; but they rarely come in quite so "broken" as the "workers" do. We had one dog thrown, yelping, over a six foot fence into a garden (witnessed by the owner of the house, who took it to a vet and then contacted us). It had a badly broken leg a

east anglian game and country fair
Fabapocalypse replied to suffolkpoacher's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
There was non-competition fun racing (short distance straight) on the Saturday... I'd not been before, and one thing I found odd about the show though was the fact that the displays and competitions (specially the dog stuff) were all scattered everywhere, kind of on the edges and up alleys, so you had to keep traipsing through all the "shopping" bits - which there were a LOT of - and it was kind of hard to find our way about. I prefer the main-arena-in-the-middle idea, with the show radiating out from that. -
Suffolk Game & Country Fair May 2nd & 3rd

Will it be possible to park near the racing area do you know? -
It's on the BBC iPlayer: Episode 22. On for one week from today.

A friend told me it was on... there are loads of hares round there, more than I've ever seen, and big ones too. My friend lives nearby. It's great to see them; we often stand and just watch them, and sometimes they watch you back. I sometimes feel, when we've got the dog on the lead with us, that they're checking him out. There's often one that will lope round us in a big circle, just lazily, like... We came across this recently at Castle Hedingham: it's called "Stubble Stags". Yours for £7000-odd. As an idea of scale my 24-and-a-bit" bull cross can sit upright underneath the right hand o

Cool photos! My old terrier would chase fish in the chalk streams around Salisbury but I don't remember him ever catching any. And what's-his-face off "Clarissa and the Countryman" had a JRT that would mark conger eel on the beach, but I've never seen a lurcher catching! Edited for confusing "conger" with "conga"

ACES lure racing day, Sat 10th April 2010
Fabapocalypse replied to ghostlyease's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Looks like everybody had a good time! Can't wait for my lad to get fit again (he'll still be last, but at least he'll look good doing it!). -
If the wall/fence is standard stock-fence height and there's something interesting on the other side of it, I would think it would be very hard to train the dog to stay in the garden; any temptation could turn up, a neighbour's cat appear, a squirrel, or whatever. I have the same issue with my dog; I don't have a garden myself so it isn't a problem at home but if I visit my folks he jumps their fences easily; a friend has high hedges over the top of stock-fencing and he even looks hard at that in the winter when the hedges are bare and there are rabbits on the other side of it. I woul

boycott these game fairs
Fabapocalypse replied to zigzag dan's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
I think some shows charge for "car parking" rather than gate entry and therefore docked dogs can be shown? And all shows, commercial or otherwise, could do with looking at the quality and pricing of catering on the day, and the state and location of the toilets!
