  1. Whereabouts are you mate? Just would like a few gills already got 7 but need some new blood. They good workers mate? Nice one
  2. Any GOOD working ferrets going to be bred in Kent this season? Could do with an injection of new genes to my crew. Cheers
  3. Butter? For a lactose intolerant animal? Hmmmmm
  4. That's strange it didn't work for you, works for me and works for every other small clawed animal kept on concrete bases
  5. That didn't work for me - I kept 3 in a big run on a concrete base, 2 castrated hobs and a micro jill. The jill's nails were never much of a problem but both hobs grew nails like badgers' - the concrete didn't make the slightest bit of difference.
  6. If you got a run put it on concrete and it will naturally keep their nails down.
  7. Fair enough lads, my oringal comment came across wrong, yes they will kill wether they're hungry or not! I like a ferret that sticks with a rabbit! My main point was, not feeding a ferret for a few days before working em means a lack of energy. Who would want to do a hard days work without a belly full of grub.
  8. I always make sure mine have had food the evening previous
  9. He said don't feed them for a couple of days, I totally disagree. I don't alway feed mine before I go. That's like you not having food for a few days then going and having a hard days graft! Your going to be f****d!
  10. Northern lad I'm sorry mate, but you obvs aint got a scooby about ferreting. If you don't feed em they're guna kill and stay down for a long time. The amount of time I've heard people say starve em before you go, for a start they will have no energy to work. It can take a while to get some ferrets working and some tend to get better over time. Get used to going into holes (I.e plastic ducting to start off), if you can get em used to the smell of a bunny, pull a Caracas down a pipe get em interested. Just keep trying mate see what happens. To start with you want to put em into a bury with
  11. Fur and feather good alongside complete mix. If you're a young fella, carrying a hob or a gill will make no odds. But carrying the larger catch back after using the hob will make a difference lol. I use hobs together depending on the size of the bury, they're more interested in rabbits than scrapping. I do like gills but like van man said, if in doubt.
  12. I've been ferreting all my life and still prefer to work hobs, they take there time and stick with a rabbit longer. A gill can be put off by a kick off of large buck rabbit. People say they pull the nets down but mine are quite slender so never have that problem. I went out with a friend recently he threw down 5 gills and they bolted 3 rabbits, I entered two Hobbs from either end and they bolted another 5. They go deeper than gills in my opinion. Or he just had shit ferrets lol
  13. I feel for ya mate, happened to my neighbour 3 times in a row, he was sixty something at the time. Now doesn't keep any ferrets or ant of his gear at his house. I keep all my gear inside but the ferrets are outside. Sorry to hear it mate
  14. I done a mole job this morning and the customer found a stoat on his drive, which was still alive but dieing. He kept it for me knowing my love of mustelids, I would love it stuffed and to keep it myself seeing as it's so beautiful. Please message me if anyone knows someone, cheers
  15. Good post Chris jones. People on the forum get upset about newbies coming into pest control, but if they was really in it for the money, would they honestly spend their spare time on a forum about it? Think about it.
  16. My keeper friend taught me the basics but being old school he was telling me some old wives takes, that he obviously picked up over time. The btmr course is good to know about mole biology etc, but the majority of what I learnt is by myself through trial and error. Different soil types and different traps. I'm a member of the btmr but none of my work has been through them.
  17. I got showed how to trap moles by an old keeper friend and the rest I kinda taught meself
  18. I've ferreted, shot, bred lurchers and snared all my life. I've got a lot of permission and one day got asked what can I do about moles, started to trap them, then went on the btmr course to get a better insight. I've also got national dip in agriculture so have a lot of contacts with farmers. I'm still in work and I'm a contractor on the rails mate, so no redundancy pay. All you guys seem to think that everyone gets into pest control to earn lots of money, tbh the pay is not a tad on the rail money but it's a way of life that makes me happy. Whenever I'm In a field with a bag of nets or a
  19. I really believe there are two types of Pesty those who get into the industry through a genuine love of wildlife, trapping & hunting and those who "fall" into the job. The above is obviously the fallen
  20. Alright boys I've got a mk1 ferret finder at my me old dears place, the screws have round off, needs new batteries but does work. When I get a chance to get round there it will be for sale only want £30 for it. If it doesn't work (but pretty sure it does!) send it back and obvs you can have your doe back
  21. Anyone selling any (working!) mk 3 collars
  22. I'm sure you can find people closer but if you can't you know where I am
  23. Muddy how true is it? I'm sure people would be a lot politer in person. I'm here just for the discussion
