  1. Hey NOW you're talking! Tracking a deer down after shooting would be a PERFECT job for a wolverine! Good luck prying him off after it's found the deer though haha
  2. Would be interesting to see how a ferret takes to the training Tomo. Some trained martin squirrel hunting in the trees would really do it! I could admire their agility all day.
  3. Got a nice new bit of land, surrounding a water plant, land is totally unkept other than the odd gravel track and is peppered with holes. Problem is I get bad readings on the locator. If its far enough away from the collars it will stop beeping but will start at 30 foot away from the collars and isnt very consistent, Ive not been happy with any of the marks to want to attempt digging. My hobs going to have to sit this permission out. Anyone else have trouble like this?
  4. Every ferrets got to start somewhere.
  5. For those kinds of hedgerows I've used bits or wood and cardboard to block them off. Once even used my bag and ferret box as a sort of scarecrow to block a route off, worked too.
  6. Different time of day to when you usually visit? See if it was a one off if it's been one day.
  7. Wellies if I had to choose. Not great on the ankles if your permissions involve steep hills. I'll take the boots if it looks dry outside.
  8. Good effort. There's usually a sneaky bolt hole on most burrows!
  9. Will just have to keep an eye out on for sale pages. They come up on the for sale section on here sometimes. eBay, gumtree. There's some mk1/2s on ebay.co.uk at the moment under £100. Bidding, so may go up and your delivery will be a bit more.
  10. Thanks Bob. Was a longnet on this particular occasion, had a few threads tight over its face holding its head down.
  11. Thanks for the replies. I'll hold off getting one, for now at least. That's the first time if felt the need for one. I usually can get the head through a hole and job done but came a bit stuck (was out alone and feeling rushed too). Tomo, How do you chin it when its head/chest is balled up tight together? I can't think how, I need to be able to free it's head for a chin or stretch.
  12. Didn't think of a fishing priest, would it be suitable?
  13. First day this season for me, got four from a big warren. Had trouble getting two from the net, one tangled up too much to chin through the net (maybe good sign of the new longnet) and both being rather aggressive. Maybe I'm out of practice. But used my locator to give a blow to the head with a chin after to be sure. Don't want to make a habit of using my locator for obvious reasons. So thinking about getting a priest. Quick search online and couldn't find any for sale. Any idea where to buy one? How would I go about making one? I'm i right in thinking they're not very big?
  14. I think some are nomads but theres certainly some that stick to the same areas so worth trying again. A big buck gave me the slip on two occasions but caught him on the third, all attempts were on the same warren a week between each.
  15. Never tried it but what id try is do it on a larger time scale of two days and leave a hole or two open. Next day they will eventually find the open hole to get out and feed then you can turn up and spook them, in the panic they wont be thinking about blocked holes and what hole they had used to leave earlier.
  16. Hair loss in ferrets can sometimes mean something more severe. But at this time of year and assuming hes otherwise behaving/looking healthy I wouldn't rush to the vets.
  17. Changing into his winter coat most likely now its getting cooler. One of my jills looses hair on her tail and lower back on the run up to getting her winter coat, she had a bald tail for close to two months last year then grew a nice new coat.
  18. Keep mine indoors, there will always be a smell but you can keep it down. Litter box twice a day as that smells the most. Better outside though....
  19. Takes about two weeks off the top of my head, I remember being surprised at how long it took too.
  20. Went out on Saturday for an hour, just a walk round really. Ferreted a little three holer we seen a rabbit enter and bolted two fully grown, dug a foot down to a third which was small. So think ill give it another month yet. Plenty about though.
  21. Just curious about everyone's plans for starting the season. What size of rabbits are you seeing and when do you think you will get out? Think I might take a ferret and go for a look this weekend on some grazed fields. I started the end of August last year and the rabbits were a good size. Bagged the strip of unkept land next to that permission finally (eight months of emails) which is their stronghold so will have a walk round, although its very overgrown.
  22. Nice one man! Im needing to get out and ask around soon!
  23. It does look like one but the colours may change as he gets a little older. Some people definitely dump unwanted kits. Water bottles something any ferret has to learn. Ive not had experience with polecats but it sounds a little tamer than id expect despite the fear. If its not causing you or your other ferrets any trouble Id keep it for now on the assumption its probably domestic.
