  1. Finn, I know exactly what you mean; my main reason for getting my old kelpie, Rust, was that I was so impressed with the kelpie/collie lurcher I had that I simply had to get a pure one. Unfortunately the two didn't get on, but that's another story. As I've said before on here, I now have three pure kelpies and although I'm sure I'd get more game with a lurcher I can't ever see myself getting another as I get such a kick out of spending time mooching/hunting with my kelpies. Changing the subject, do you know much about the parentage of the two lurchers? The reason I ask is that until rece
  2. Mine get everything from the ear tips down to the toe-nails. I've always worked on the assumption that a) if they didn't like it they wouldn't eat it and wild dogs don't skin their kill before eating it. Edited to add: I have no idea why that smiley face is coming up in the middle of my post, I've tried editing it out but it won't go.
  3. Phew! Problem solved! I received a very swift reply telling me they'd be sending out a replacement on Wednesday. In hindsight I have to agree with you ferret15; they could hardly just take my word for it and it was after all damaged in transit rather than before. I've calmed down now.
  4. That's a coincidence; I was talking about this very subject to my Nan yesterday. She kept a cock and hen wyandotte bantams in an urban area and they overcame the problem in the same way that DesertDog recommends ie to reduce the height of their housing so that he can't stretch to crow. Having said that, my Mother in Law lives in Southsea in Portsmouth and somebody in a road close to her has a cockerel which crows off and on during the day. It's just one of those things; some people love the sound while others...are sad b*****ds with nothing better to do than moan and whings and...
  5. After reading all the positive comments on this thread I decided to bid for one of these on ebay last week. It arrived on Friday but I've not had the chance to put it up until today. On opening the second box, containing the roof, I discovered that it's been damaged, presumably in transit. There are a couple of gauges in the felt and a split in the actual wood itself behind one of these gauges running over half its width. I've just phoned the company in the hope that they could simply send me a replacement roof instead of having to send the whole thing back and was told they'd need me to s
  6. I had a similar problem ie a rat in my compost heap until today when one of my kelpies dug a two foot hole in the middle of the heap and another nailed it as it bolted.
  7. Kidney stones; apparently it's the closest a bloke can get to giving birth.
  8. I've heard that if you want the job done quickly and you're not worried about how it's done eg keeping the sheep in good condition etc, then a huntaway's hard to beat. However, like everybody else, I've heard they're noisy in the extreme. Having said that, some people say the same about beardies. (Incidentally, the chin scratching is with regards to them passing it on to a greyhound cross rather than to using beardies.)
  9. I saw two ACDs at a country show about twelve years ago but never saw any more until last Christmas...I've now seen three in the last four months. One was much racier than the others I've seen in this country (either in the flesh or in photos) but the chap walking it was just dog-sitting for a friend who was away for Christmas and said it had recently been imported from France. Walking towards it from behind it took me a while to recognise it due to its build; I initially thought it was a chunky collie cross.
  10. Thanks. None of them are particularly recent so will try to upload some more to photobucket and add more soon. Most kelpies I've seen are slimmer and shorter coated like Amber and Scout but Rust's sire was just like him with a thick brush tail and very thick ear leather. They look more like huskies than kelpies. I often get asked how my lurcher is bred when people see Amber. Scout looks like a tiny whippet/terrier as she's only just over 17".

  12. Rust Amber and Scout again, as a pup rounding up the bantams.
  13. OK; I've made lots of notes on a scrap of paper and I'm going to give it a go. If this works, there should be a photo of Scout after her first ferreting trip. ...D'oh! I've tagged the image, hi-lighted the IMG code, right clicked, then left clicked to select copy but nothing comes up. What's the glaringly obvious thing that I'm forgetting. Aha! I forgot to paste. What a plonker! Right, now I'll try some more...
  14. Dingos, or is it dingoes(?), have white feet and I'm sure their's are pretty tough.
  15. I don't know if this will be any help or not, and will incur an additional cost, but how about these: www.shepherd-hut.co.uk ?
  16. Two of my kelpies occasionaly bark. The small bitch sometimes opens up behind a rabbit and the male does the same and also barks when he's marking a treed squirrel. My taller bitch never barks and neither did my kelpie/collie x greyhound.
  17. The retrieving trips are particularly good. Edited to say: oops sorry, slip of the fingers, I mean tips; not tRips.
  18. Apparently there was a shepherd with a cream kelpie and a kelpie x collie on Sunday's Countryfile. I didn't see it but it's available on iplayer.
  19. ...now where did I put that photo of Rust winning Heel Work To Music at Crufts?
  20. When I bought my first kelpie I was really worried that the shepherd I bought him from wouldn't sell the pup to some fool who'd waste him by just chasing rabbits. It's great to find so many other people who work them too. I have to admit that I bought him with the intention of producing a litter of lurcher pups but by the time he was a year old I swapped my allegiance. I'd probably catch a lot more with a lurcher but I much prefer the company of my prick-eared mongrels. I'm a bit of a computerphobic and have only just built up the courage to save a load of photos to my laptop after possib
  21. I'm with Stormrider on this one. I've met sheep and cattle dogs varying from very soft to very hard. Some people get on with certain types and not with others; it's just horses for courses. I feel that one of the biggest problems with collie crosses is people's perceptions of them eg some people prefer a harder dog and meet a soft collie cross and assume they're all like that.
  22. I think it was John Holmes who imported the second ACD, Honey, into the UK and although he worked his Heelers I think all the other imports have been from show blood. Incidentally, I think Speckle was sired by Honey's son called Kulta.
  23. Apparently they wanted them to change their name to The Rescue Centre Boys; I kid you not!
  24. Stabs, I think I remember seeing a photo of the dog you're talking about in a previous thread; handsome looking dog if I remember correctly. I met a bloke a few years ago who asked if my kelpie, Rust, was, "one of those Australian dogs." The reason he was so apprehensive was because he'd been chased across a campsite in Australia by one. Also, when my middle bitch was at the vets for a few days two years ago, as they didn't have Australian Kelpie in their data base she was recorded as Australian Cattle Dog. When I went to pick her up she had a really gammy eye and the stupid veterinary n
