  1. his book are ok, but it is mainly story telling, for the novice, the books don't really tell you much about the sport you are wanting to enter tbh...
  2. correct about him being a little bit of a fibber, but I would like to know your reasons for saying "props to the ones who get them to work" They were initially bred for rats, but do make great all round dogs providing you put the effort in to them. A dog is as good as you make it. I know people who have used plummers for earth, rat, bushing, and would not fault them in the slightest. So i am interested to know what makes you say what you say....
  3. what do you mean the ground is always torn up? foxes chew, dig ,and tear up the ground when in a snare, simples yeah....i thought you meant in the trap not a snare...simples
  4. so where would you reccomend getting decent snares and traps from?
  5. what antibiotics mate ? cephalexin --- order on line ... if i`ve got it i use clavamox or amoxycillin ... is that for injection? and dp you give them that before or after ratting and do you have to give it them every time? soz for all the questions, but I'm just starting out ratting on my own with my own terriers and want everything to be right sorta thing cos i value my dogs to much
  6. nicely done mate. how long did it take to make and did you buy parts or just use what you had.
  7. Theres no set month better when we have had a few frost so the growth has died down. Introducing pups to rats depends on the dog 6-9 months some may be a bit slower. Jab 10 weeks old an will be covered by leptospirosis (Weil's disease) cheers christian what do u treat wounds with and do you bath your terriers after they have been ratting?
  8. I know you can hunt them all year round, but do any of you have a set month that you hunt them? also whilst I'm asking, when can you introduce a pup to rats for the firt time and when would it need its jabs and what jabs will all terriers need to fight off against infection from the rats. Thanks guys! Andrew
  9. last night he was chewing and licking his pad so im convinved its a thorn but still cant find it
  10. I'm not sure, because he only appeared from under cover when he was in lame so I cant really put two and two together so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what it might be
  11. as stated i was walking him this morning and he went lame on his back right leg, he can put his leg down but not for very long. I'm thinking it might be a splinter because he was running through thick cover, I have inspected his pads but its really difficult to see anything with them being black so if it is a splinter does anyone know a way of drawing it out? I have bathed his foot in warm salt water for a few minutes to void off any infection. what do you think?
  12. yes your right, hands on is the best way toget started. get yourself a terrier and start doing a bit of ratting with it. when people see you have a terrier and that you are responsible, you will have more of a chance. faliing that, keep reading, andwhen you feel confdent, go a walk round your local, get some practice in, learn from your terrier and then ring up some local farms etc etc thats how i would do it anyway
  13. yeah get 'em on if people are stupid enough to put pics up of there mauled dogs. I should of put a pre warning in the title "idiots need not reply or comment"
  14. a decent terrier will find them out mate you can help things along to up your bag by the end of the day by shifting bales and shit heaps where rats are likely to be
  15. its not that they are not very inviting, the main thing is the trust issue - they dont know you and taking a complete stranger out doing something illegal is very risky and a risk not to many lads are willing to take illegal ? yes, if it is not carried out in accordance with strict conditions it is illegal. However, like you (well i assume) you are pointing out, you may use one dog below ground to flush the fox to a gun if it is likely the fox is going to cause damage to game stock etc etc
  16. its not that they are not very inviting, the main thing is the trust issue - they dont know you and taking a complete stranger out doing something illegal is very risky and a risk not to many lads are willing to take so dont take it personal. There are probably anti b*****ds reading this as we speak you can never be to careful and we dont want to give them ammunition
