  2. newspapers what i use gnasher , i just change it everyday
  3. not on any other forums mate , did read about some exhibition budgies being taken in cage and aviary last summer . the guy was retired i forget his age but he was getting on and his local bird club replaced some birds for him and updated his security , they went to buy spare cocks from him turned up 3 of them and he thought they were studying his setup and not really interested in the cock birds .
  4. had similar happen when selling chickens , i had rare breed norfolk greys sold a trio and lost the rest 2 days later but couldnt proove anything so now have a couple of cameras looking over the garden and no longer breed chooks . some people are too low to describe , im on the herts essex border and before xmas we had a city link van with the lettering removed crewed up europeans driving around looking for dogs they even had a woman with them that would walk the same park all day with a dog striking up conversations with other dog walkers and tipping the blokes the wink asto what ones to fol
  5. yep just a normal bulb no dimmer or anything i have the door open when i turn their light off at night for about 10 minutes so they can find their perches and touch wood no problems , i know its not ideal but for now its all i have
  6. the birds are in there , its just a large cupboard under the stairs , full height at one end tapering to 6ft the other it does have electrics in there so they are not in the dark . when the rat visited i placed them in normal budgie cages as that was all i had and placed them in thereto keep them safe , a few weeks later a guy was selling the triple cages on preloved so i bought them as with the slides out they are 52" wide so plenty of room i think where the light was on in the cupboard this got them into breeding mood and i have decided to leave them in there for this year so i can get thing
  7. i will do , all the planning will be worth it in the end . i paid £20 for my red/black hen but havent found a cock bird nearby yet . at the moment i just have 2 triple cages in the cloakroom under the stairs and a large vision cage to house the chicks when they are old enough . i do have a 6x4 shed with 6x6 flight attached that did house my finches and canaries until potsy rats paid a visit and turned all the finches including chicks in their nest boxes and a lovely pair of intensive reds into their dinner all in one night things . so now deciding whether to rat proof the shed or take it do
  8. good question , i already have a lovely red/black cobalt hen which is referred to in the book as a intensive bronze so i am looking for a cock bird to pair with her , she is currently paired with a recessive white and sitting on 4 eggs . if i had the space and the money i would like some of the ino , agates and topaz i also love the pics he has of the siskins my favorites are the recessive white brown opals and the dimorphic mosaic red agate opals , cant wait till geoff gets in touch telling me they are ready to collect
  9. got home today and the wife gave me parcel that came through the post . when i opened it i found she had bought me a copy of colored , type and song canaries by g b r walker ( a guy i have been lucky enough to order some birds from ) admittedly i have only had a quick look through and read a few chapters but this looks like its going to be a useful book and one i would not hesitate to recommend to anyone getting into canaries . the section on sex linked genes is going to be really handy ( once i can get my head around it ) and the pictures are really good even the weird looking types like
  10. thanks guys will let you know what happens
  11. thanks pete, havent used dummy eggs decided to do it naturally , have the egg food and soaked seed , rings arrived yesterday just split rings as im not too interested in showing at the minute and that way i can tell which chicks came from which pair , we have a large coat room built into the front room and my cages are in there so nice and warm . basically just doing it for my own enjoyment for this year and hopefully i will be alot more experienced and take it a bit more serious next year . the plan is to just go with the flow and enjoy breeding them for now
  12. both my red factor and red/black cobalt have both now started sitting tight these will be my first canaries that i have bred myself , cant wait till hatch day
  13. you must be over the moon , bet your ticking all the colours you like in your book , would love to see some pics when you get them
  14. really lking forward to getting them , do you have any pics of yours tong po ?
  15. dont mean to be viscious i googled coloured canaries for sale and the east anglian zone of the ccba came up so had a look just to be nosey and this guys phone number has the same dialling code as mine so thought it would be rude not to get in touch ( thats what i told my missus ) unfortunately he had already sold his spare birds for this season but has a list for birds hatched this year so i had to take advantage . i cannot find anyone else breeding the recessive white brown opals so will be nice to have some of the more unusual ones . needless to say im well chuffed
  16. i got his email from the ccba page , dropped him a line asking if he had any birds for sale and he offered to place me in his order book for birds that hatch this year , im going to buy his book might even ask him to sign it when i go to collect the birds , he breeds mosaic red agates , opals and classics and he is local to me too so all good
  17. just reserved some birds that i will be collecting in the autumn for breeding next year from the coloured canarie author g walker cannot wait getting recessive white brown opals and mosaic red agate opals . to say im pleased is an understatement . here are some pics of the colours im getting from a dutch website
  18. cheers for the offer gnasher will bear it in mind but i do prefer the more active birds , wonder if the crest interferes with their eyesight making them less mobile , thinking of getting some whiteblack opals or onyxs if i can find them but it seems to be every time i look on the computer i find others i would like
  19. hi gnasher , you had red factors and red/black cobalts from me , how are they getting on . i had a rat get in the aviary and take all my birds apart from 7 of my canaries so they are indoors at the moment , might have to rethink the glosters as dont want a lazy bird just sitting still .
  20. cheers pete have sent you a pm with my email address , there are so many different colours and feather types , im looking to get some of the crested glosters , want to breed a nice crested red just because i like them and cannot find any
  21. found this one on the canary breeders page on facebook , says its a red/black cobalt x onyx
  22. what i was told when i first started keeping them last year was that intensive birds have feathers that have no white at all and the non intensive have a white frosting to the edges giving a more dilute colour , and that 2 intensive birds should not be paired as it will result in the chicks having the lethal gene and only around 75% of the chicks would survive , but im still learning and try to read everything i can find ( not that i understand it all )
