you say you got it for ferreting, how does she react to a netted rabbit, I start my dogs off often on ferreted rabbits if you now what I mean, not sporting I now but its got to now what to do, give it an easy run out of a net and make a fuss of it if it catches never mind a retrieve. Plus you may have to make more of a bond with the dog yet.

Thanks for the reply JD one of my dogs is a greyhound/whippet x saluki but is a lot smaller obviosly with the bit of whippet in it. They look simaler but it just shows how photos can be deceptive. Yes its true what you say about deer nearly always making their gettaway along the same route. A couple of years ago I used to lamp a spot for foxes alot and at the top of this field in a hollowed out hedge sometimes there would be a green pair of eyes watching me about 2 or 3 hundred yards away that would vanish. When out in the daytime at the same spot with my dog running off the lead he shot off af

could be stress if they fight with each other and are un happy, or is the skin red it could be mites or fleas even if you can,t see them. Have heard the hormone one before also. My ferrets hair thins out around july to october as well then thickens when it gets cold, but not bald.

Not really much to do with this topic I know JD, but just interested to know what is the height at the shoulders of scooby and what percentage of saluki to greyhound is he, also has he any whippet in him. He looks simaler to the dogs I keep but I imagine Scooby to be a little bit bigger at about 25" As its hard to put the pictures in perspective. Thanks

Ive been using a mk 2 for ages with no probs at all, as long as i keep the batteries fresh. I work mine often with 2 ferrets with collers on with no probs and when their in the same spot I can tell with the crackle of the box. I suggest you send it off to Deben and get it checked out as they will service it for you and set it up. Give them a ring!

Tried alot over the years. Alot of the acme type ones I have had a limited amount of sucsess with. The best one I have found usefull to me is one made by OLT its black plastic with a reed in and looks like a set of car feeler gauges. But when the fox is coming in and its getting to the point of circling round me or getting real close I nearly always end up coaxing it that last bit before the slip with the back of my hand. Ive often got back to the car on a cold windy night after a nights lamping to find blood on the back of my hands were my gums have ended up bleeding with sucking the back o

Theres one thing for certain, I would have needed a good scope to shoot the bugger as I would have had to have been in the next valley. I would not like to have been near that thing if I winged it with my first shot. :11:

Hi this is one of the only pictures of him I have, I as I said I will have to take the camera with me when I go out working him. Do your pups look similer.
-
Hope your right there mate. I will have to take my digital camera out with me and try and take some snaps of him working. A lot of people who i,ve talked to have knocked me for getting a saluki cross but I dought if they have seen one work its amazing how people put so much stock in what other people say without finding out for themselves.

Its a strange thing when I trained him and even still now he never showed much interest in retreiving balls or such like he just naturally carrys live stuff back to me straight away from the first time he caught anything, he also willingly lets go of it when I take it off him and make a fuss of him. Strange! He is great at bushing stuff out as well, its the first time I have had a dog with any saluki in it ( he,s 1/4 saluki). Just goes to show don,t believe all you read!

Ive got a 14 month old saluki X greyhound / whippet dog measuring 23" just. He,s coming on well with rabbits and feather retrieving live to hand without me having to walk to him and he,s totally soft mouthed, really soft mouthed which has been rare in the dogs ive had before. As he is fairly small, well smaller than dogs ive had before, when he finally catches one of those big long eared rabbits we all know! I am worried that he will have trouble carrying it back to me because of its size and it kicking. Should I run towards him and get it off him before he mauls it because hes having t

Was on the phone to a guy at Red Mills Killkenny in Ireland, talking to him about feeding supplements with a balanced diet dog food such as red mills racer. This was when I was running dogs on the fens and was wanting to get the best from my dogs. I almost wished I had,nt asked the question as I was on the phone for what seemed like hours. These guys are specialists in their fields, and even though we mean well ,what came out of the conversation in a nutshell was they provide a balanced diet "just that"! He even explained how certain things they add help other things to break down. Anything w

a jill -- Wait till the bug bites!
-
From my experience most of the hobs ive bred kill underground given the chance more than the jills. If you are going to keep one, then a hob would be ok, but if later you decided to get another which most people variably do then I would recommened you start with a jill. Two hobs kept together will sometimes scrap with each other and fight for dominance. And if you put a hob in with jills he will bother them and drag them about alot when they are in season ,sometimes even when their not in season. Also you will have the problem of pregnent jills if not. (unless you keep them seperate) This i

They always drag the dead ones out, do not be tempted to go near to the kits or ferrets for at least 3 weeks because she will feel threatened and may kill the kits, especialy in your case as the jill is not used to you.

Can,t understand it Leon when I got married and had kids It gave me a good excuse to get out of the house, ( hope she does,t read this) LOL

Its amazing the amount of people who you meet at shows and places who talk a good lamping dog and have amazing stories about what they and their dogs can do. I seem to attract them as I have had the unfortunate privalage to invite quite a few of them out with me over the years. People stood shouting at their dogs while they go daft in the field, dogs that clearly have done nothing before. If these people were honest in the first place you would,nt mind giving them the chance to bring there dogs on as I have with others. It reminds me of an old racing saying WHEN THE FLAG DROPS THE BULLSHIT STOP
