lurcher and terrier together in same kennel
Jordb543 replied to mrmen16's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
My terriers block the kennel doors stoping the others getting in lol it is was right pain the kennel now has two doors I think the main problem with terriers is they use their size to 'claim' places and things bigger dogs cant get to, and they arn't afraid of anything -
sounds like you have your hands full with those jacks, are they long or short legged?

hi all, i know there is alot of people on here who use their running dogs for a bit of bushing, so i was just wondering what you expect from your bushing dogs and by that i mean all the dogs not just the running ones but the ones used to flush the game aswell, do you give them direction or do they just seem to do it by themselves?

I dont own any running dogs yet will do soon though , but i do own a very good example of a dalmatian (im not just saying it cuz hes mine) he is actually my step dads and i didnt really like him much to begin with, but after seeing him with a few other ones round my way he is a much better example, the things i could see him bringing are a good nose, good feet, and most of all stamina which they have in truck loads, however salukis have good stamina, and im sure the feet and nose can be found in other breeds aswell, so really not much use for them, but if someone was to do it with a go

Hi all, This year im looking into getting into fishing properly so to speak. Over the years i have done fishing on/off and between me and my brothers we have gathered a fair bit of tackle, rods, reels etc, but only ever gone say a handful of times a year but come march i will be buying a new rod lisence which i havnt bought in years (usually get day ones), as i intend on going very regulary, I know a few knotts, rigs and techniques but would love to learn some new ones and catch more fish aswell as different species etc so basically ive started this thread in the hope people wil

Percentages and their effect on a lurcher
Jordb543 replied to mattydski's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
What Ideation has been saying is bang on the money, basically any percentage even a 0.00005% in theory can make a difference, and if it didnt many breeds of dogs today would not be around. its all about what is in that percentage and how it reacts with other genes from the other dogs, and what gene combinations occur so on and so on, and is completely random. a dog has 78 chromosomes (39 pairs) each chromosome can usually contain anywhere from 100-1000 genes!!! so 1 dog could have 7800-78'000 genes, that in itself is a huge variation and is altered due to in-breeding, cross breeding a -
Thanks for the info everyone really appreciate it, so would you reccomend i keep him on a leash and let him watch and learn whats going on the 1st couple of times i take him? if i can find some people near me to tag along with dont worry i will, but if not im going to have to learn hence asking questions which some experienced people might think are daft, but when your from a family who doesn't hunt and none of your mates do meeting the right people can be hard hence asking on here, everyone has to start somewhere

hi all, i plan on taking up ferreting soon and i will be using my terrier as my canine companion, but im just abit unsure on what ferreting dogs are to do, i know they mark active warrens but once its netted up what do they do then? do they sit and wait for any bolters where holes have been missed etc or do they get them ones in the nets aswell? sorry if this is a daft question, but ive never been before so dont have a clue lol

Lucky you, i would have love to have been able to find these when i was a kid still would now, if they are by the lakes chances are its the frogs they are after they bloody love them, i think thats one of the reasons they never took off in captivity as it was hard to get them onto rodents, ive never kept one my self though so could be wrong lol, changing the subject i just read your article "ferreting, a life long passion" was a great read mate and has given me the kick up the arse i need to take up the sport

I would love to see a grass snake, ive not seen on for ages, seen the odd slow worms and luckily i know a place with alot of crested newts so not all bad news, He was probably having a new year bask now that the temps are getting warmer The ferret would kill the snake without a doubt. I wouldn't be so sure mate i think it would last longer then you think, grass snakes can hit 6ft in some cases, and they arnt venomous and dont constrict, so when they bite their food its to eat it whole so they cant afford to let go, so as you can imagine they have a bloody good bite on them

Small lurcher or whippet to help terrier out?
Jordb543 replied to Jordb543's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
if i was to go down the whippet route would you reccomend a ped or non-ped? or is there not alot of difference i assum non ped means greyhound in there somewhere? Tbh rocky i would like to get permission on all different types of land but havnt really bothered as i dont have a dog that will be able to use it, so really a lurcher that i could take on those kinds of places if i wanted to would be nice, not saying it has to catch huge bags maybe just one or two would be fine by me, would be a change of scenery etc and keeps the dogs busy, if im asking too much of a dog to be able to -
Small lurcher or whippet to help terrier out?
Jordb543 replied to Jordb543's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Tbh at the moment i only use small fields with a large head of rabbits with alot of cover as the terrier usually always gets one in the bushes etc then, but with all the different types of land where i live if i had a running dog i would try and use as much of it as i was allowed lol -
Small lurcher or whippet to help terrier out?
Jordb543 replied to Jordb543's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Thats true, as long as my snakes get fed then im happy, if theres any left over for the dogs or me for that matter then thats a bonus. I was thinking this as ideally i would like the terrier to flush em and the lurcher/sighthound to catch em once they are flushed, as for the working terrian it would vary quite alot as round mine there is flats, hills, moors, dunes all sorts, i dont have permission on all that terrian atm but who knows what will happen lol, would be nice for a dog to be abit of a jack of all trades master of none tbh lol -
Small lurcher or whippet to help terrier out?
Jordb543 replied to Jordb543's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
First off thanks for the quick replys everyone, Sounds a nice dog that mate you got any pics? would love to see it, That thort had crossed my mind and i had thought about a larger cross but with a large dog in the house and to small one already i think another large one would be a bit of pain, and also still living at home my mum would not take to kindly to it lol Bushing is mainly what i would be doing and might take up ferreting but that would be it i imagine, what are whippets like compared to beddy/whips injury wise ive heard some bad things regarding easily d -
How much Barf to give terrier daily?
Jordb543 replied to Jordb543's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Thanks mate i have messaged you I also like to see my dogs with a decent waist and neat tucked stomach dont want it looking like a barrel with legs like alot of terriers you see walking around lol -
Hi all, im interested in getting a small lurcher or a whippet to help my terrier out mooching round and bushing, the terrier is doing very well he is great at flushing rabbits and has caught a few in thick hedges, branbles etc, he is surprisingly fast but obviously not fast enough to catch a rabbit in the open, so im looking for somthing not too big but quick of the mark to snap up the bolters once he's flushed them out, i was thinking beddy/whippet cross or a pure whippet but i dont have any experience with running dogs so any other crosses etc that would do the job please let me kno

How much Barf to give terrier daily?
Jordb543 replied to Jordb543's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Thanks tina, the calculation idea was sort of a guideline which i would then add or take away from depending on how he fares, i generally go by if the dog is standing relaxed you shouldnt be able to see the ribs but you should be able to feel them -
Hi all, this week i have started introducing BARF into my terriers diet and will gradually get him on a pure BARF diet, at the moment in total he is on around 300g of food a day, he weighs in at around 6.5Kgs, i was wondering would he need more, less or the same amount of food on a raw diet? and if anyone knows of any tables or equations etc i could use to calculate a rough guideline, as i will apply it to the other dogs once they switch over to the diet as well, Oh and he has 2 long walks/runs a day with a couple of mooches for rabbits etc every week, so not worked hard but doe

anyone else got any pics of these types of lurchers? im currently doing abit of mooching with a plummer/lakeland, just started doing it its going well, gets enough to keep the snakes fed, but i would like a little whirrier to help him out to pick up a few bolters, but would still want it to be able to tear into bushes etc as the terrier does and come out unharmed as he does, also would maybe take it ferreting if i choose to start that not looking to get it anytime soon a few years probably but if my snake collection keeps growing could end up being sooner

no worries mate, i dont get to give alot of advice or tips on here as im new to the whole hunting thing lol, our rabbits where subject to frost last night cars all froze up puddles rock solid but their water bottles remained 100% unfrozen probably just abit cold
-
I know i dont use lurchers and have only just starting bushing so not everyone will listen to me much on here but i have studied a little bit of ecology and rabbits like many lower level food chain animals are constantly subject to an occurance known as 'population boom and bust cycle' basically meaning they regulary drop dramatically in large numbers which in turn has the same effect on their predators and then they have a huge increase in numbers again, but the cycle can be distrubted from heavy hunting when there numbers are low, luckily due to their capacity to breed so quickly they a

thanks for the tips every one, ill find a place in the garden for them to go and knock up some housing before i even start looking for ferrets, best to get them from wrking parents i take it? i never do, always built anything like that, my dad never did always built his own and made me help now im exactly the same lol, you can always build something better quality for a fraction of the price compared to these pet shop hutches, dog kennels etc
