Sundays Ferreting Fun
Downunder_Sthn_Ferreter replied to Downunder_Sthn_Ferreter's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
They were originally purchased around 20 years back now... Gee time flys hey... There 4 ft nets, personally like them over the white ones we get here as they have a double outside line, makes them last longer. There also a stronger weight material than the white models. The brickies hi viz string i use is very very good... Cheap and silky smooth on the close up The original running lines were crap once they got a bit of moisture on them as they swell, then the net goes into slow mo mode when a bunny hits it Cheers, Shaun -
Had to travel back again this morning as i left a $200 Puma Pocket knife up there on Friday This knife was originally bought for my Dads 40th way back in 1975. So it has obvious sentimental values ingrained into it. After recovering this, it was left from where i had cleaned the Bunnys, The game was on >>> So the morning was a little slow to start with, strange as i was setting nets at 6.15am...eventually a bit of action started.... Coco & Molly both Keen for a bolter.. I weckon i heard a Wabbit !! I did ...I did ...I did hear a Wabbit !!

Thats the great thing of forums... We all have different passions...& it is such a good thing when a fellow follower can help you out where needed... In a LOT of cases it beats hands down ringing a shop etc as you get to deal ONE ON ONE with a person who is as genuine as you are in helping you out.... Good to hear. Cheers, Shaun

Who likes KFC ?....
Downunder_Sthn_Ferreter replied to Downunder_Sthn_Ferreter's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I reckon the half 3/4 grown bunnys do make the best eating. Tenderwise they hold there own against an older bunny of 12 months or more. Still Overnight saltwater blanching makes an older bunny come up pretty good prior to cooking. Thanks for the replys to this recipe.... I think it will become a bit of a saturday night fav with the Family Cheers, Shaun -
Well i got a little creative in the kitchen this evening. What with all this excellent fresh Rabbit meat on offer i had to do something with it, so i gave this a crack>> Spent some time looking at a heap of copy cat KFC recipes, Settled on one & was pretty happy with the first effort. The rest of the family and some friends made pretty short work of it all too Was a lot less fatty than the usual chicken Anyone want the recipe & method i used, Just send me a pm Cheers, Shaun

Went out Friday for a few hours with the Dogs & Ferrets. Found a monster sized bury on a steep hillside, being one up, i found i could net up one half & work that before moving to the next half. The Girls waiting for the bolt. They've located a bunny thats got a ferret firmly attached to its rear end. We'll hold it until you stop taking pics ok Dad Didn't have to walk to far today as i had phoned the land owner the night before, makes it real easy Moved on to a few smaller burys that produced some more. Thought i heard something ?

Those propertys your on look like typical Werribee farm areas. Nice and flat with out 45 degree hillsides, like it is up at Myrniong. Still there also looks like a fair bit of ground cover/rubbish to net amongst. Cheers, Shaun

Nice one mate, Sounds like you had a great bit of action for a couple of hours. Were you around the Werribee way ? I was out yesterday morning also & will post soon. Out again in the morning also. Cheers, Shaun

Job well done, Now i know why, Bunny's have extra long ears & why they place barbed wire every 6 inches... Makes for the perfect earring/piercing for bunny's at the end of the day Cheers, Shaun

Hey Commanche, Great fireside pic with your dog's & nets... Reminds me of my Mums place in the country, she used to breed a lot of Whippets & had a similar fire setup to yours. Complete with ash covered tiles Nice nets by the way.. Cheers, Shaun

Few Hours Today

Gday Rich, cheers mate.. The Whippet is a pure bred with papers, just on 2 year old, hasn't been bred as yet. Some seasons see 'milky does' throughout the season without any real probs with small young bunnys. Usually this is when we have a wet summer. This hasn't happened for a LONG TIME,as most of Aust has suffered with drought conditions all over. Still the bunny's breed & breed September till Jan are the months of heaps of youngy's Feb is usually still way to hot weather wise. Come the first cooler nights during Late March, then it's really on This is my fa -
Few Hours Today
Downunder_Sthn_Ferreter replied to Downunder_Sthn_Ferreter's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Thanks Guy's for the replies. It was a bit warm yesterday, hence the T-Shirts, Temp was 26/27, don't like to be out any higher than this as it takes it's toll on both Dogs & Ferrets. Early in the morning there all over the place, there's a fair amount of younger ones at the moment, so i have been trying to keep to the smaller burys as you get stuffed about on the larger ones too much this time of year. Mixy is no where near a problem like it was years back. Some areas have a bit of it during the height of Summer when the Mosquitoes & Flea's are prevalent. Calci Virus -
Went out for a few hours this morning to the usual patch of ground i've been frequenting lately. Most of yesterday was spent restringing the drawlines on my nets. Got a 100mtr roll of hi-viz fluro yellow braided line from Bunnings for $13. Aud. Great stuff and so much easier to use for both bolting bunny's & when setting or wrapping the nets up. Now ive got no excuse for leaving them behind as they are easily spotted compared to what they were. Only took me 10 years to change them Had a couple of guys who haven't been out Ferreting until today. Was good as the

good working russell's
Downunder_Sthn_Ferreter replied to shaunpauls7's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Hi all, Here's my long lost pal who was put down a few years back now R.I.P "Ruppy" Great dog with an uncanny brain. Ruppy with his daughter Tasha in the backyard... Originally aquired him from a lady with family issues when he was a 6 week old pup. He became a good friend working on charter boats with me as well as Ferreting. Put him over a Jack Russel bitch around 1997 & ended up with a tiny little pup bitch from the litter. Tasha, She's been another great companion & also is quite good in the field. Considering her demure size she copes p -
Have never used one myself.. Considered one a while back, but seriously i don't feel they are mandatory to success or quicker workings etc. Over the years we have always had terriers with us. There better as they don't need batteries replacing and make for entertainment. Yet to see a collar of any type make me smile.... Well unless its one of those studded type affairs on one of the Tv show Charmed girls etc.... Also it seems when you here of people who use locaters often, there is always mention of a shovel. Obviously the dig is probably more sort after when using loc

I was on the phone the other night after my last trip, speaking with a friend who used to own Ferrets. He also used to work the same areas i do now. He told me of a single warren with over 100 holes, He used to carry 100 nets most of the time. He was with his Father this day & they put down a bunch of ten ferrets of different ages & experience. They bolted 54 there and went home after that. Easy mornings fun. The 18 i got on my own last Sunday was for me, pretty reasonable given i was there at 10.00am & driving home at 2.00pm. Havent had a tonne up day

Thanks reddog, Although there are plenty of snakes about over here. I must confess that i am yet to come across one while Ferreting. I have seen them here and there when walking with a rifle, but never when I'm with either dogs or ferrets. Touch wood i haven't mozzed myself after that comment Yes, well after viewing your snow laden trip recently, I must apoligise as we never get conditions where i go even in the depths of winter. P.s All the best for your dear old man Great setup also you have done with the phat atv 4 wheeled rabbit machine. Do the bunny's over -
+ = Great post & a good reward for the work ...well done Mr T/p Prime Rabbits too Cheers, Shaun

Gday James, No she's a Polecat Jill desexed. Around 16 months old now, shaping up very very well as a solid worker from what I've seen so far. Here's another pic indoors to show you her coloration. I also have a B/E/W Jill that was also desexed around the same time as the polecat. She too, has been a delight to work so far with no hold ups whatsoever... Yes it makes for a lot less hassle if you can get it. We have plenty of assorted shitpiles of Blackberrys & Gorse in a lot of area's near where i frequent. Longnetting would be a far better option than pooncin -
Wasn't the nicest of weather down here this morning with a few wind assisted showers making it a little damp. Still the game was on the move after a pretty slow start in the first set. Just the one was dispatched there... I snapped off this pic after spotting a fair attempt of a commando camo rabbit doing its best to conceal itself. Unfortunately when it did bolt seconds after this pic was taken, My Whippet had missed the boat so to speak and had to watch the distance increase as it sped away... Next set was a little better with a quick trio taken before it was over. Tas

Hi all, A few notes, from a top mornings action on the Bay as we call it... This was a nice opener this morning out wide off Carrum in 21mtr. Gary found the mark first up as usual... Soon after there was a bit of this happening to the Nitro Distance Spin: Bag limit wasn't too hard with a lot of distant yahoo's & wooohooo's heard all around from boats way off in the distance & one other closer by. From what i could hear and was told from others, not too many missed out on a bit of action this morning. After the frenzied bite early up, it did become mo
