  1. What the hell is avairy abandoment? Fair play to the gent with the hawk i dont know i was just told this by my mentor Could you ask your mentor to explain in layman terms what avairy abandonment is. It sounds like the birds been kept in an avairy for 2 years but I cant be sure and if that is the case I am astounded that your mentor feels it would be unable to cope with chasing rabbits it would require manning and fittness training but then it should be as good as any other hawk.
  2. hold in there someone will eventually find out I have always used the Luksander mn 10 with XLF transmitters can recommend that but never spoke with anyone using that system

  4. Harris Hawks seem alot more resiliant to things could be there more easy going attitude than falcons although that really depends on the bird had some very chilled falcons
  5. its just sometimes birds die from other things such as ticks they leave very little evidence but can kill a bird very quickly usually if your mews/ avairy has any over hanging foliage as the ticks will fall off wild birds then get on your BOP and kill the poor thing.
  6. No license needed as they are no longer registered you should give them water so they can drink and bathe they need feeding but the level of food depends on what the hawks been doing. Weights are basically what the bird will respond at but I would always fly my bird as high as possibl You could go for a female straight away but I think many people under rate the males they have fantastic agility and can nail rabbits with little issue although I have seen mine ride the head of a rabbit like a bucking bronco till I got over and spiked it. People who trade up for a larger harris hawk s
  7. Get your friends to mentor you and get a Harris I would suggest a male as opposed to a female for your first bird Mews 4'L x 4'W x 4'H Avery I have mine 8'L x 8'W x 7'H but I believe the smallest you can have that is ok is 4'W x 6L' x 6'H (some people say to have as large an avery as you can but remeber that if a bird panics and flys straight ino the avery wall the bigger your avery the faster the bird is going before the impact and the more damage it will cause itself) Use a range of perching varied sizes and materials so the hawk has the choice of perch and reduced risk of bumble foo
  8. did you have an autopsy carried out?
  9. Good points raised there Gingerxr2 however I feel your figures of £3000 may be a little off As his profile has no location date of birth etc I suspect it is just a wind up but it may not be I do think they need to consider the points you have mentioned regarding a mentor and a screaming hawk as parent reared does not guarantee a silent bird. I have seen some birds in crap condition because they were bought on a whim by someone who wanted one but didnt weigh up the commitment needed. Although the Harris is a good choice for a begginer as its a very forgiving bird. I have a parent reare
  10. Only if they are grey squirrels lads your best to use live traps if your in an area that has reds so that you can release these protected non target species
  11. Its not far off 2 acres CH, just moved in there a while back in a cracking spot on a sporting estate! I was shocked to see a Muntjack in the back garden the other evening plus there's a pit at the end of the garden full of bunnies like watership down .... In one of the pictures looking across the fields shows the nearest house to us... Thats pretty good mate I hope to eventually get a house with land like a small holding or the like at the minuter I have a national trust area but not sure its a good place to fly the hawks
  12. There was a buzzard knocking about but it wasn't that close, yes i let him feed up on the woody, then the following day he wasn't fed to keep his weight down. I've been out with him today at 1lb 5.5oz back on the creance as a precaution, and he was excellent to the glove, Last season was flying him at 1lb 5.5oz Once I get a bird flying free I never return it to the creance it tends to annoy them more than anything. Just my opinion mate if your happier putting it on a creance then do it. The buzzard may have spooked your hawk then mate. Bloody dog spooked mine and he just did off into the
  13. I have a PeregrinexPrarie thats been badly food imprinted lovely bird until food is involved had the damn thing leave its food and sink its talons into my leg then start biting until it realises I aint gonna die and gives up. Took 20 minutes the first time but only took about 7 the last time Like the bird and I am working on her as she is a strong flyer but a nightmare on kills I agree though they are lovely looking birds and well worth flying with the attitude they have Keep posting guys I am finding it interesting to read how you are getting on with GyrxPraries not something I
  14. If he wont bathe try misting him with an atomiser this will encourage him to preen
  15. Nice pics mate she is a good looking bird do you fly her in a cast with your mates male?
  16. Ok your bird may have been spooked by either another bird of prey or percieved predator did you look about for anything like that? What did your bird finish his season on last year before the moult? When he caught the woody did you feed him off it or did you stick with docs? Just different food types have different energy values red meat can be like rocket fuel to a hawk.
  17. Nice avaries mate you must have some sized garden
  18. I would lock the new perch in the shed on a night with the birds also
  19. Cant see the picture but I would love to see a hen hunting hares What weight you flying her at by the way ?
  20. you dont pin them through the ring mate you tie the 2 enda to the peg have a look at soom pics on here if you put it in the ring the net can not close Ahh that would explain it I will take a look for some picks thanks for the advice
  21. Hi I am new to ferretting with purse nets I usually bolt the rabbits and hit them with the Hawk but thought I might try purse netting to increase body count as the Hawk only catches one rabbit at a time and can get any that bolt from holes I have missed. I took the net and pinned it through the steel ring to the earth above the hole then spread the net over the hole stuck the ferrets down the holes and a rabbit bolted out of the netted hole but failed to get caught up in the purse net What did I do wrong ?
  22. Beggers belief when you can obtain these birds that are bred by breeders so easily why the hell would you go for a haggard or passage bird ?
  23. No I agree prosecuting on a technicality after changing the goal posts is not correct I am just glad they went ther looking for an illegally owned falcon the fact he had eggs didnt really bother me. But they should not be stolen from the nests so its a tough one to call
  24. Ian Vance I believe sells them http://www.falconfabrication.co.uk/travelb...ravelbox?reload
