  1. AAS410 is a nice gun does me fine why spend all your cash in one?
  2. Welcome Phil I am sure you will find lots of advice and banter on here
  3. Met a bloke today who is having issues in his large garden with Rabbits. He asked me if I would go up and ferret them for him but its too far so I said I would ask on the THL and see if any local lads up that way wanted to go and help him out. I have not seen the garden but from his description its big he was talking about a burn and hedgerows and being far to large to rabbit fence it. If any one is interested please pm me your number and I will pass it on to the bloke so he can sort it out with you. ATB City
  4. Things to consider if your going to go it alone in pest control you need the courses so your qualified, business insurance so you are covered if anything goes wrong, a van equipment dust stick traps poison etc. Advertising money to gain work, a bit of luck and a way to chase up late payments or bad debters. You will be joining the ranks of approximately 37000 UK pest control companies and competing against them many will be one man bands but others will be nationals or large regional companies. Going with a company first gets you experience with them taking the risk on their insurance and
  5. interesting I had rats climb in the ferret cage to steal the food last thing it ever did
  6. sure you will be able to find either just contact some breeders gl
  7. Probably looking raggy due to moult and probably a recently lost one the one I lost has never been heard of or seen so I presumed it was dead.
  8. Billy long shot but did it look like an older male with telemetry on? I lost one in the dry dock at pallion about a year and a half to two year ago bloody thing caught a pigeon in the rafters where the cranes run and then spent a month or so eating its way through the pigeon population before it left the area. Was nine year old so would be 10 or 11 now.
  9. Lee had a falcon suffer from WO he used to moult and the feathers would drop out as they regrew free lofted him in an avairy and they grew in and stayed in. What injury did the bird suffer and are you intermewing it or freelofting?
  10. If thats true report him and get him done
  11. I would suggest that if the bird is found you return it and actually try and mentor the bloke so that he gets a clue how to look after birds. All that will happen is he will buy another bird and the cycle of bird mistreatment will continue. People do things not necessarily out of badness but out of lack of knowledge or experience. Its all well and good getting on a high horse claiming should have done this or that and shouldnt have birds. The guy has got one lost one and is likely to get another helping to sustain the prolific breeding of harris hawks. Might not be the best way he has gone abo
  12. Would love to know how he entered his birds on them I tried feeding mine some that I trapped and they didnt seem to recognise them as food and so wouldnt touch them Personally I think your looking at a miner bird to get at the moles thats where they get their name from isnt it?
  13. Alec surely there is a chance of causing more harm than good by feeding vitamins to a bird. In the wild there are no vitamins added to their feed so why would you want to add vitamins to a captive bred bird unless you are saying there is not enough nutrition in the foods being given to our birds. Although I did hear Neil Forbes saying that day old chicks with the yolk sack were a well balanced feed for birds. I feed these and throw in quail, rat, rabbit, pheasant and squirrel when I either catch or buy them from my supplier. Even tried guinea pig once but the birds were non too keen. My co
  14. Never bother with them you should be getting enough in the birds through their food

    Gutted

never had a bird break a wing in free loft. Had a falconer break a falcons wing when he brought it down to the lure and a bit of wood was sticking up out of the ground which it clipped. What is the set up of your free loft is this the first year you have free lofted the bird? I am quite suprised as harris are fairly relaxed birds and pretty bomb proof from my experience. You hadnt free lofted it with mews jess and swivel on? You will probably find it heals ok and flys like before after a bit of rehabilitation Sometimes happens atb
  16. Cheers Bear can't believe it didn't come up in my searches
  17. The lamp on my Tracer Stinger has gone pop anyone know where I can get another? Searched Fleabay and Google and cant seem to find the same lamp it states GY . Xenon Lamp . 6V 7W Cheers
  18. I would think again there is not really enough work for flying birds of prey as there are loads of companies already doing it. You may get some work. However the bird is there all the time and actually interferes with your pest control work. Unlike our guns and poison etc. You cant leave the bird until there is work for it you have to house feed and keep it flying otherwise you will go to the job you have got the bird for and look like a right plank when it buggers off, or sits up while you call it. I would suggest you get some people in your area who already keep and fly birds and hire them f
  19. Well the Harris is a fantastic bird and totally done for due to its prolific and ease of breeding the prices are almost disposable now. I have noticed a massive surge in goshawks for sale and being bred do you think these are going to go the same way? Bull I have done the lantra it was worth doing as it gives you a good understanding of many aspects of falconry I would do it sooner rather than later you will get experience of picking up and putting down birds I had to demonstrate lure work and complete a booklet that looked at diseases, bird care, housing etc. I would say definately get te
  20. Jarrod advertise for a mentor mate in your area or join a club otherwise there is a strong chance of you losing your bird
  21. If you have been out with a mate then he should guide you on the manning and training of your bird as a mentor because you are asking basic questions on an open forum that most people will have similar but differing stand points on these things. Flying weight is a very individual bird specific thing and also varies on what you are trying to achieve with your bird I have known females fly at weights from as low as 1lb 14.5 oz upto as high as 2lb 6oz hunting. I must state here they were not the same bird. Things that effect flying weight Age/Experience Fitness Size of bird (large s
  22. I use boxes for travelling so the bird is protected from anything falling in my van and hitting the bird if it was just on a cadge with a hood. When out flying I dont bother with a hood or lugging the box
  23. so long as there are no gaps and a cover over the vents to difuse any light down why would it not be black in the box Grovsey?
  24. I have trained harris both ways to eat on fist and to throw food from out once the bird is just sitting on the fist. My male that I hae used this method of throwing food for him when he is sitting on the fist using me as a prech to hunt from has on numerous occasions flew with the food back to my fist to eat it. This method however was only done once I had him eating off the glove in the normal manner of presenting glove and then providing food on a variable schedule once happy on the glove I started throwing food out for him
  25. Main influencing factor mate would most likely be cost and wether or not corrosion was an issue with the bird muck
