Cormac McCarthy Blood Meridian is one of the few books I've read more than once. No Country For Old Men and The Road (a very dark tale) have been made into movies. Cheers, Mark

Sounds like you've got some good contacts. I don't do any calling. The only coyotes I've shot, just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I look at the Predator Masters site every now and then. Hunting.net is good and has regional forums. Cheers, Mark

I've never tried rabbit for fajitas. That sounds fantastic, but you should really use sour cream instead of mayo. A lot of people don't know this, but proper fajita meat is skirt steak, the diaphragm of the cattle. There is not enough diaphragm on two deer to make even a single serving of fajita. Most folks round here use beef flank steaks, chicken breasts and even shrimp. I also serve with avacado slices and fresh pico de gallo (lots of recipes on the internet). I'm lucky enough to live near several "carnicerias", Mexican meat markets where I can get the freshest ingre

We have venison curry often and agree completely with Langouroux about the Basamati rice. It's the only way to go. I like the dry mixes you combine with yogurt. I make what I call "white boy" curry so the rest of my family will eat it. I use about 1/3rd the dry mix with the full amount of yogurt. Toss in a handfull of diced carrots and green peas. Be sure to get naan (the proper bread) when you're at the store. Cheers, Mark

You've got lots of good advice from the previous posts. I would like to reinforce what someone else posted: Leave your moderators at home! You need special permits from the Federal government to have one in your possession. I don't know of any states that allow them for hunting game animals. Some do for non-game but it varies greatly. Those things can even get a US resident in a world of trouble! Ammo is cheap and easily obtained here compared to the UK. Every state has different rules and seasons. Get to know them for the state where you will be hunting (Kentucky?). Make sur

try this: range locator Good luck. Congratulations.

Hi Mark, Hope your deer hunt went well, I'm interested to know your results, and how the Mossberg performed. Cheers, Bob. Must have missed this earlier. My buddy with the ATR has been on stand but nothing showed up but bucks (non-shooters). Unfortunately, he has yet to take anything with his Mossberg but I will be sure to post a report (and hopefully pics) when he does. We've got another hunt in the works. Cheers, Mark

You might suggest that your friend contact the manufacturer. This kind of press is not good for a firearms company and they are likely to help get it fixed. Cheers, Mark

Might try contacting some of the folks here: coyote hunting Cheers, Mark

Gamekeeping Books
Fishslayer replied to hext's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
I posted this last September. The Autobiography of an English Gamekeeper I found it to be a very interesting read, from a historical perspective. The website above (Internet Archive) and Project Gutenberg are great sites to read books on-line for free. Cheers, Mark -
Here are a couple links to various discussions about using .223 on deer. Opinions vary. AR15.com deer hunting forum TX Hunting Forum Cheers, Mark

Buck makes a lot of good, inexpensive knives. I use a Zipper: http://www.onlyknives.com/buck-zipper-fixed-blade-hunting-knife-high-carbon-stainless-steel-blade-with-guthook/ Its got a rubber handle and I appreciate the safety of a gut hook when field dressing a deer after dark, after a long day afield, when tired and cold. After four deer with out re-sharpening, it sliced through whitetail ribcage like butter. Cut the crap out of myself one morning. Fishdaughter has a German-made "Eye Brand" knife. Don't have a pic, but it is a folder with two blades; a regular cutting blade a

Yes, it's an armadillo. Possum on the half-shell is just a joke. Yep, a 50 gallon drum filled with corn. A motor on a timer runs a spinner plate that broadcasts the feed. Not exactly a sporting stalk, but this was a management meat hunt. Still have to observe closely to take a mature doe and not a nubbin buck. Thanks for everyone's kind comments. Cheers, Mark

Deer, pheasants, squirrel, etc... someone will be eating very well.

That's a beautiful place to hunt. Huge deer too! Thanks for sharing your pics. Cheers, Mark

Just a few pics from earlier this week with my daughter, hunting whitetail does in the mesquite/pricklypear scrub brush north of Abilene. I really enjoy hearing about your stalks and seeing your pics, so I thought I'd share some of mine. View from the box blind (hide). View looking back. Fat doe taken by Fishdaughter at about 150 yrds with .243. Dropped in her tracks. I got one with my AR-15 in .223. Possum on the half-shell. Cheers, Mark

Like shooting sand out of a slingshot (catapult).

I got a sweater. What I really wanted was a moaner or screamer.

Piqued my interest as I shoot .243. Norma makes a grain .243 in FMJ. Norma .243 FMJ Hope this helps. Cheers, Mark

Hmmmm... One of my favorite pics...ever! Makes me laugh out loud. Cheers, Mark

First deer hunt. Not me. Really!

Three foot tall. No teeth. Flat head, so you have a place to set your beer down.

Remington 870 12g pump. Dozens of barrels: short to long, rifled to smooth. A 870 can function as a rifle (mounted with a scope) on large game at about 100 yds using rifled slugs out of a smooth barrel or sabot slugs from rifled barrel. Tons of different barrel lenghts available as are chokes, stocks, extended magazines, pistol grips, speed feeders, etc... Sturdy enough to pole a boat through mud/sea ice then can be used to club baby seals. It ain't pretty, but a lot of cops and military depend upon them. Cheers, Mark
