Out for a little ferreting session tomorrow, anyone fancy a guess on how well I'll do? Bit of background info.....the farm I'm going on has approx 9 warrens, ranging from 3 holers to 12 holers. I'll be working two jills that have only ever been out once before, one is 8 months old and the other 19 months old. I'll be using three 12 foot gate nets (as mini long nets) and a lurcher, no purse nets. The farm doesn't have massive numbers but it's not dead either, pretty average I would say. Just for a bit of fun, have a guess on how many we'll end up with and I'll do a bit of a write up

I can see why someone would breed their dogs if they get one that really does the business, but I find it bizarre that someone is thinking about breeding a dog that they've not even got yet! especially one that seemingly has a relative low success rate......I guess it's this sort of mentality why there are quite a lot of lurchers in rescue homes or being passed from pillar to post. I mean, if someone gets a greyhound that is basically useless in the field, but breeds from it anyway, they'll sell the pups and then a generation further along how would anyone know that the original greyhound wa

Am I the only one wondering why a newbie is thinking about starting his own line of lurchers? Why not just concentrate on getting a dog that will suit what you want, and concentrate on enjoying your hunting and gaining experience with what you've got? You say you don't want/need a big dog, and yet you want a greyhound?? do you think they're small dogs??? Just get a lurcher and get out as much as you can, simple as that. Not sure what the motives are for starting your own line but put it on the backburner until seen and done ALOT more!

Why would you need "gameness" in a lurcher????? Theres NO quarry in this country that requires a lurcher to be game !!! why would you need a lurcher to be game? are we talking bullgreyhounds or lurchers? if a bull greyhound is not game what use is it? i'm confused. I think some people get a bit paranoid about the law sometimes. It's not illegal to have a net! If you have a net and they stop you (which they wouldn't), tell them you've just bought it and are going home.....or just tell them you're going for a walk and it's not illegal to carry a net, simple as that.

no dont get me wrong, I'm not saying its ok to feed it to them, its just knowing what I know now I'd have thought they'd die of malnutrition within weeks on bread and milk! funny how times change though. re. tinned dog food, it's far from a suitable diet for a dog, never mind a ferret IMO......natural food all the way for both!
