If that auld hound only knew how many lads would like him part of their team!
-
I'm working a brilliant pack of Airedales. The photo doesn't do the dogs justice, they look bigger in real life.......and from left to right....Sika my tracking machine......Meabh just a pure workhorse and Phoebe who is like Usain Bolt through the cover! Together this pack works absolutely solid and are all great with other dogs in the field. I couldn't ask for anything more.

When you have two dogs out with you, one being a veteran terrier that is on semi-retirement, and you don't have to say "there is bound to be something in that hole, try the old dog".

Sounds like a good tough hound to me!!! Come on guys, someone has a need for a hound. Get the pics up if you take it in.

Án Táin Working Airedales - New Recruit
foxhound45 replied to foxhound45's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Hey Jachtterrier, I have never worked a German Wirehair or Jagd terrier although my roots lie in stalking deer and have seen the Wire-hair being worked several times this past few years on Sika deer. An absolutely fantastic dog! Brilliant at pointing deer and following up, although I do know of one dog that has loads of fire and if the deer is wounded and the dog is not already on a long-line well go off in pursuit. This is only down to training and I know that with good training a wire-hair wouldn't do this. But one thing is for sure with any of the German breeds you can't question the -
Sounds like the ferret might have been getting tired and not pressing enough to bolt the rabbits. Did the wind pick up at all or any of the lads start getting chatty towards the end of the day?
-
I am beginning to see how special these dogs were, basically ya needed a dog that would near treble itself deaf but at the same time have the fire to hold whatever it was put. In the pre-locator days you would be talking badger too, so finding that dog that could do both must have been like finding gold. I know good working terriers are like hens teeth now but pre-locator days when someone said good terrier.....by frig they really meant a god damn good working dog!

The thing I can't understand is if the earth was about 7 feet deep, deeper than the spit, how did the old diggers know where to start digging or did you's ever end up missing the tunnel completely?
-
If your depth was say twice the length of your spit, how did you use it to gauge the depth? I have always wanted to know how to locate terriers without a box, I do it at the moment with an ear on the ground before sticking on the box but it is something I would like to get good at just incase electronics fail in the field and I can't leave the hole. Can anyone describe the whole process from terrier entered to breaking through.........say if the hole was 7feet deep.........deeper than the spit. Did it happen regularly that you would have broken through off target, greater than 4 feet

Workers? Meant wormers.......predictive text.
-
Muesli is an absolute farce of dog food, no matter what it says on the bag. Sounds like worms, the dog is eating non-stop and is down in the dumps.........I would bomb in the workers before going near any vet for antibiotics. A good check of the stools will reveal all......grey or off colour for infection or big ganglion white worms.

Good man, not many working wheatens these days!

Best Way To Get Ferret Off Of The Rabbit?
foxhound45 replied to Dranny GLC's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Just let the ferret hang off the rabbit, it may take a few seconds but she will soon let go. Don't keep her too high off the ground, so she lands gently enough. This really only works if you have someone else giving you a hand to replace nets. -
Án Táin Working Airedales - New Recruit
foxhound45 replied to foxhound45's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Hi Pitdawg913, I am currently using my dogs to beat large mountinous cover e.g. heather bramble, gorse and plantings for foxes. Now I know that foxes compared to what you guys hunt in the U.S. seems pretty mundane but I do use my youngest bitch for tracking wounded deer that I cannot locate. It would be the only time I work her using a long line and she knows her 3 deer species here, fallow, red and sika although I once watched her begin tracking a patch I am convinced was muntjac scent on the tips of small plants. Skycat, thank you once again, especially for understanding that should an -
Án Táin Working Airedales - New Recruit
foxhound45 replied to foxhound45's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
They work silently but when on the arse of something or pushing something through the cover they will give tongue. The good dogs will give tongue beating cover and are completely silent when digging. Some people think that because they don't give tongue it would make life hell for lads holding lurchers round the cover because they won't know where dogs are at a certain time. These dogs are for working thick plantations and hard bogs, even better if working with hounds..........hounds being a bit slower and more methodical while Airedales work faster and push through all cover spanning -

These pups are so important to re-establishing the Airedale as the true "HUNT TERRIER" to compliment hound packs, working alongisde lurchers and terriers or work solely as a unique pack within Ireland and the UK. What the Airedale brings is diversity and each person who receives a pup has his/her own part to play in re-establishing the breed. Taking the time to allow the dogs to mature, make mistakes, rectify issues and for me the handler is more important than the sale of the pup. He or she doesn't need to have experience even seeing an Airedale, just the want to develop and hunt one.- 69 replies

Your Jill's shouldn't be playing at holes. The Jill jumping back down the hole say 15mins after you have started ferreting that hole sometimes means "I haven't finished yet" but if your Jill is doing this at the end of ferreting every warren then you have a totally different issue. If this is pure play, you may have no option but to hold your ferrets from hunting for a month or so until they mature. If they are sulking down the hole at arms length this is the worse case scenario and is a symptom of someone or a dog grabbing your ferret before it's eyes could re-adjust to the lig

I am in Northern Ireland, I have plans to bred the oldest bitch, the one under my left hand in the photo of the three of them. I now need to get them ot over winter and really start pushing foxes so I can really see the strength of each dog. That oldest bitch I aim to breed is from digging history and it shows when she is out in the field. Great bitch for marking holes.

And where it all started........................

Án Táin Working AIredales would like to introduce a new arrival to the pack: A 1 year old bitch from American Working Lineage, deep chested, strong feet and coat with a powerful set of jaws. It will be interesting to run this bitch with hounds and with the Án Táin pack. It will be interesting to find her strengths and will sure make this Christmas hunt interesting with having another strong bitch to be pushing through the cover. This is the new bitch: Two current bitches that have taken me to all lengths of the country to find: And the current pack is it now stan

A new 1 year old bitch from American working lineage has joined the pack. Deep chested, strong feet, large powerful jaws but more importantly able to range out through the larger plantations and bogs. Great to see the pack begin to form and thanks to "The Hunting Life" I have been able to locate a sire form working lineage to put across the 3 bitches, so maybe next year working Airedales will be available for those who want to work them. Great working with hounds as a pack themselves. If anyone would like any info on working Airedales PM me and I will get back
