Used to catch carp on the fly using a hares ear back in blighty. all the best Dirtwinger

I have caught plenty of carp this way in the past. The best spot I have has surface feeding carp but they are easily disturbed, a lot of people fish there and the carp tend to get scared off unless its a very quite day. I am sure I will use this method from time to time as opportunity presents. Thanks Dirtwinger

thanks richard that was very helpful, one slight problem is the fact that you cant buy pre made flavours here in the US for carp. for catfish no problem and I may try my hand at some catfish boilies. Have you any idea what the flavours are and could I use stuff from the supermarket that would work instead, i would really like to make a go of this and any extra help would be very appreciated. all the best Terence

Back in the early 90's when I still lived in the UK I had a dog that was a traveller magnet. He was a saluki x collie/grey a real looker tall racy and a very nice blue merle to boot. I would get stopped walking him all the time, a transit van would pull up and money would be waved out the window. I would say no but they would follow me offering more and more money. When this happened the last thing I wanted to do was walk home, I would got to the pub instead until they left. they never did find out where I lived, sadly the dog was killed at 2 1/2 by a train while chasing a fox. all the be

How do you hair rig? I dont think importing boilies would be practical, any suggestions on making my own baits? I will go out again this weekend If I land any doubles I will post some pics. all the best Dirtwinger

Hi all, I use to carp fish in the UK but now live in the US in New Mexico. I have been fishing for carp in the Rio Grande using mainly sweetcorn, I typically catch 6 or so carp a session but would appreciate some tips on good hook and bait setups. I have found that I only get good bites on a size 16 hook with two pieces of corn, any larger and the carp are very hesitant to bite I think they feel the hook and leave it. Also what would be a good weight of line I have been using 4lb test which is too light, last Sunday I was snapped up by three fish in the twenty lb plus range. The week before

I have found liver to be very effective, my personal preference is hare liver as this has a very strong scent often I get bites within seconds of hitting the water. A lot of people over here also use shrimp or hot dogs. I hope that helps Dirtwinger

Although I now live in the US we have plenty of antis and PETA types here. i always go out of my way to educate people about my dogs and falcons. remember the impression you make on someone reflects on all hunters, so mouthing off tars us all with the same brush. It is far better to polite and reasonable, if the person wants to make a fool out of themselves so be it but dont sink to their level. They will with luck make their opinions look stupid to others present while you come across as the reasonable one. I consider it a duty to my sport to be an ambassador for hunting at all times, it cos

Depends, if it's public land you can just go on it. If I dont mind driving there is hundreds of square miles of public lands out there. Getting permission on private land is pretty easy once you find out who it belongs to, a mate of mine has 800,000 acres packed with hares to run on all private you can walk all day and not see a paved road. It's rather nice after coursing in the UK for years I feel pretty lucky to live here. atb Dirtwinger

Technically there is no close season hares are considered vermin and you can hunt all year. I personally stop as soon as they begin to breed at the end of March. i will start hunting in earnest in mid September although the very best coursing is after Dec, I will hunt for six months about four times a week and catch upto a hundred hares during that time depending on injuries etc. I catch a few rabbits but not many about one for every ten hares is the best I've managed. i just hope the old boy will keep going all season otherwise it will be a short season this winter. all the best Dirtwinge

I am starting to get ready for the upcoming hunting season and getting my old fit as he is all I will be able to run this winter. he is looking good after his surgery to remove a six pound tumor earlier this year. Now it's getting a bit cooler we are getting out to the desert more often, this time I took the pups along as I didnt want them to miss out on puking in the car. the pups had a good time although the old boy only got one run as the pups where in his face constantly and he didnt see at least six hares that got up. Here are a few pics from our mooch. Percy having a rare moment o

Not a fan of the breed myself but I will be devils advocate here. My brother had an undocked doberman in the early 90's in Ireland to guard his stables. Very hard dog with a strong prey drive, would smash into any cover after a rabbit or fox so individuals can have the right mentality. Dog was put down after it started killing sheep on the neighbours farm. But as has been said there are proven crosses out there that do the job and you must remember "never trust a dog with orange eyebrows" All the best Dirtwinger

had a saluki x collie/grey years ago, the most criminal dog I have ever owned even worse than whippets. I had to put a chain and padlock on the fridge and freezer to keep him out thieving b*****d. Also an escape artist first he started getting out the garden by eating through the fence. So I kept him in the house, he just gripped the doorknob turned it pulled the door open and was off. So I deadbolted the door, his next trick was to open the windows and jump out. All he did when he got out was walk across town to the pub where I worked wait for the door to open slip in and sit on a bench and

It took two seasons for him to get solid with the dogs he really didnt like them at all at first. Then i lost him for 2 1/2 years, this will be his third season since he was recovered. I took him out of the mew yesterday afternoon to get him sized for a new hood at a mates house, he picked up good as gold despite being really fat. I put him back in the mew as he still has 2 primaries coming down but another two weeks and we will be getting started. all the best Dirtwinger

My gyr/prairie started donating on the hat this year, I didnt encourage him he just started doing it I have to wear a cap everytime i go in or I would be washing my hair everytime I fed him. Not much demand around here for Gyr/prairie semen though but he seems to enjoy himself. all the best Dirtwinger

Going by looks and personality there wasnt a bad one in the litter, time will tell how they turn out. If they turn out the quality of the dam and sire I will be happy. Only had one go to a non working home so I should get plenty of feedback as to how they do next year. The last bitch who was the biggest in the litter 22lb at 12 weeks has gone to be a service dog for a mate. My mate is a disabled navy seal and he wanted a dog that had a bit more character than a golden retriever or some such boring dog. heres a couple more pics from yesterday all the best Dirtwinger

Spent many happy days hunting in that Glen, your making me jealous roaming around up there. I love hunting in the desert but it doesnt hold a candle to the highlands. atb Dirtwinger

Took the two pups out yesterday with their parents for a mooch around on one of my fields, we didnt see anything but the pups had a blast. Loki and his mum Gobi the Tazi cross rare moment when all 4 were in the same frame and I could get a pic. By the end the pups had really got into it, still a long time to wait until they will be doing the real thing. all the best dirtwinger

does colour make a differents>>>???
dirtwinger replied to spiderfly's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Colour is just a personal preference can it do the job? Thats all that really matters in the end. Having said that I dont much care for red or fawn as a colour they just dissapear in the desert. All my mates seem to run dogs this colour and it's damm confusing figuring out whose dog did what on a course, a few white dogs out here would be nice when we run. At least when I have judged coursing meets the dogs have coloured jackets on making it easier. And yes it is a daft question but you wont learn unless you make a fool out of yourself every once in a while. atb Dirtwinger -
Updated pics of my pups almost 9 weeks
dirtwinger replied to dirtwinger's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Thanks, Daisy may be going to Maryland on the east coast so she wont be seeing any hares. She would be working with terriers on fox, groundhogs with perhaps the odd shot at a deer. atb Dirtwinger -

Thought I would put up a few pics of my pups from today. I am keeping the merle for sure and either the remaining dog or bitch depending on the decision of my last buyer. Loco the male merle Cowboy my other dog pup Daisy the last bitch she is already 16' at the shoulder and has a lot of bone she will be a big girl I think atb Dirtwinger
