A , I think some of this could be down to firearms departments insisting on DSC qualifications before they will grant deer rifles. Of course it is . It also means that newcomers will have some idea of what to do with a rifle when they get it ! B , Can anyone tell us why the BDS treat muntjak like vermin yet insist on a DSC qualification before you can shoot them. Nobody has put up any good reasons against the system so far ???? Some guys are complaining , but saying nothing constructive .IE, money! rich blokes ! etc etc The other guys are just getting on with it and doing the course so its out of the way. The courses are actually getting more popular each month,which means people can see the benefits and the reasons for doing it . You have to make your own mind up which way you are going and what you are going to do . Research it yourself !

Inaugural deer course in Wales 3 December 2008 Another first for BASC Wales, this time in March, was a DSC level 1 deer stalking course, held in Llanfynydd, Carmarthenshire. Members from across Wales and from as far afield as London took part in the four-day course presented by BASC training officer, Nick Lane. Of those taking part, only one has to retake his theory paper, meaning that the course produced a very high standard of pass rate. You can rant all day, but at the end of the day...you cant tell me that DSC whatever level, isnt a money making scheme. Go and look in your shooting times magazine and look at all the ads "Accredited witness stalking available". The only difference between going on a stalking outing and being witnessed on a stalking outing ,is the filling in of the portfolio.WHICH SHOULD NOT BE CHARGED FOR !!!!!! It doesnt matter what you do in your spare time whether its Stalking ,golf or crochet !!! There will always be someone with more money than you,who can pay for things they want . Money has SOD ALL! to do with the reasoning behind the DSC scheme. David Beckam has the same driving license as you do ,but that doesnt make him a better driver !!!! DSC 1 only involves target shooting DSC 2 You have to shoot three beasts and be witnessed. But you don't have to shoot the deer on their ground ! You can find someone who can witness you and you can trust . You can ask your assessor to recommend a good stalker for you to approach and they will! Take a bit of time and find out who the rip off merchants are and just avoid them ! There are plenty of straight up guys out there . Speak to people who have done it and have good things to say about the ground and the stalker. Check out the different stalking forums on the net ,plenty of

The DSC scheme does not make you a good stalker ! In the same way passing a driving test doesn't make you a good driver ! But there has to be a standard somewhere? No-one is claiming that this scheme is perfect ,because it isn't . But it has to start somewhere and if we don't do it ourselves for ourselves............THEN SOMEBODY ELSE WILL !!!! WHATEVER it takes ! get her back on the stop whistle ,and don't move on until she is steady . Keep her on the lead for the first fortnight.Every time you stop .she stops ! Third week tie ten feet of rope to the lead and see if she stops ?(make damn sure she does ) She doesn't get fed until she sits to the whistle. A lot of people dont like them ? BUT . An electric collar would be able to sort this out .Used responsibly. Its either that or back to basics andSTOP whistle.But expect to do a bit of chasing and shaking.

A friend of mine uses one on my driven days .Looks exactly the same as a full blown Lab ,you wouldnt even know the difference unless you were told . As far as training and working...exactly the same again as a normal well trained Lab . His does all that is asked of it and is a good allround dog . As long as the parents are working dogs ,the pups "should " work OK ,whether its sprockers/springadors/or any other combination.

20 bore 2 3/4 , 1175 fps , 1 1/8 oz , Nitro magnum 4,s Remington . had the hounds in last week and dropped a vixen stone dead ! at twenty five yards. Didnt even twitch! I think I could have got another ten yards out of it and still stopped the vixen. They are advertised as "Extended range buffered magnums".
