This is an excellent reply, thank you. You may not be an expert but you have a good knowledge and a great way of getting things across. Many thanks! I'll keep you posted.

Might try the bike thing. He will chase a ball but then the competition is on with him and my GSD. She has a little possession issue right now, something else to work on! Problem is too, he has to be muzzled in case he chases a little dog, he has never learned not to yet. He can be around little dogs as long as they don't run or act like a victim - I know he has no aggression, just very immature and we think he had little or no socialisation with people or dogs. He's scared of people BIG time. How do you reduce a photo to a size that you can upload onto your posts? I'll put some of mine on

I do try training to distract him but he goes right back into it. I actually think that he has gotten worse this last week since my sisters saluki x has been muzzled on the walks. She just won't have a run with it on but she has to wear it after catching something she shouldn't, wouldn't mind but it was a local country park. When she runs she takes Casper with her and I think he needs this. He will spend the full 2 hours playing and searching in the bushes but he needs the run too. Beautiful dogs btw

I need to be the pack leader. Since my old mongrel died in Sept my shepherd has gone a bit naughty so I think I didn't fill the gap that Elsa left. Note to self....must by Cesars book I walk my 2 for about 2 hours a day but this is in one hit around 2pm ish.... maybe I should break it into 2 walks? When I got him the dogs home wanted me to feed him large breed puppy food for another year but I disagreed with this (as did their behaviourist) so I switched him. He is now on Harringtons and it suits them both wonderfully. The protein is 21% so I think it's ok. He is putting on weight as he w

Thanks christine - my sister does the pushing your arm in more thing as it's a parelli horsemanship thing. There is alot of similarites. I will keep this up as I think he will get the message. I did some clicker training with him at the dogs trust when I was visiting him and he is a quick learner. When he goes a bit 'loony' if I ask him to sit he immediately switches into a biddable lad, then he reverts straight back!

Hi all - I'm having a little trouble with my Lurcher and he is my first lurcher so any advice would be great. He has mad moments where he will be very exuberant and start biting me, no malice at all, just a big game to him. The more firm I am with him the worse he gets, sees it as a challenge I guess. I could cope with this if lasted half an hour or so but he goes on for 2 hours+. By the end of it I'm so stressed out. I try to isolate him by putting him in the garden and this seems to work well but most of his 'moments' occur at bedtime. I can't isolate him then because if he barks I get gri

HELP!! how to stop 6month old pup eating crap?
Lola replied to a topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
I think the pineapple only works if it's eating it's OWN crap! If it's your other dogs crap it eats then you will have to give it to them too. Dogs are supposed to know what they need more than we do but it's gross all the same. -
I had my Lurcher from Dogs Trust and they insured him as a crossbreed. My GSD is insured through marks & Spencer and is a good insurance which covers each illness for the life of the policy. Healthy pets is another good one.

My rescue Lurcher has had his removed so I was wondering if this was a sign he was maybe bred for working? He was around 6-8 months when the dogs home picked him up off the streets. He'd already had an op to plate a broken leg. I find it strange that no one went looking for him.

He sees small dogs as prey unfortunately, not sure how he'd be without it. I think he's just a bit rough with them and people with little dogs won't be happy if he chomps them! Don't want him getting into trouble before I've had chance to suss him out.
-
Thank you both. I think he needs to put some weight on though. he's the right side of 20kilos according to the vet but he is a boney git.

Any clues about his breeding? http://s717.photobucket.com/albums/ww179/L...nt=DSC00009.jpg http://s717.photobucket.com/albums/ww179/L...nt=DSC00008.jpg http://s717.photobucket.com/albums/ww179/L...nt=DSC00012.jpg http://s717.photobucket.com/albums/ww179/L...nt=DSC00355.jpg http://s717.photobucket.com/albums/ww179/L...ent=Dogs211.jpg

Your right, promise I'm not an anti. I'm just a woman with a GSD and a Lurcher and I came on here just to try and find out where I can let my lurcher be a lurcher. It took me until the comment about 'something fishy' or words to that affect to even realise where this thread was going. You'll see me post on here more often now for advice as Casper is my first Lurcher. I want to know things like where I can take him for lurcher shows and the like. BTW - Lola is my shepherds name, my name is Ashley so hello to you all. Your foot should still be intact

Thanks, I'll just ignore any daft comments now. It's all good and well putting witty retorts but then it just escalates. Best to ignore it. I'll soon work out who the sensible ones are, thanks again.

People who talk of the "slaughter" of rabbits............... Oooh Sorry Don't mean any offence and we only use that term as a way to quietly giggle about 'the families in the park' expected reaction. Be gently on me, I'm ignorant sorry treacle within the hunting community we dont slaughter any animals so go play the boys and girls on the rspca forum Ok - let me start off by apologising for my 'throw away' remark about slaughter. I really didn't mean to offend anyone. I have NO issues about hunting. I am pleased that my Lurcher has the chance to do what comes natur

Yeah well we have to laugh about it! We want somewhere 'deep' in farm land with no roads to worry about. Also looking to learn more about working them. The saluki x is a stunning specimen of muscle and is a very adept hunter....even things she really shouldn't but no one saw so .....PHEW! My first piece of advice before you venture anywhere near farmland is make sure your dogs are 100% STOCK BROKEN then and only then consider taking your dogs and letting them off in the countryside also make sure recall is spot on as once your dogs see stock or happen upon new scents they will b

this is what this site has to offer ,advice to novices from novices that think they know all the correct answers . Jessy - I don't wish to get into any slanging matches here but I would like to point out that having read a few of your posts you seem to like stirring things up. I AM a novice and don't wish to become an expert in anything. I am more than happy to take advice from anyone offering it and to use my own intelligence to interpret it how I see fit. An 'off-the-cuff' remark about not getting caught made me smile, NOT want to go out in army combats and twigs in my hair! Not eve
